President Zelensky confirmed in his late night address on Saturday that Ukraine's military was now pushing the war onto "the aggressor's territory".

He went on to thank Ukraine's "warriors", and said he had discussed the ongoing operation in Russia with the country's top military commander - Oleksandr Syrskyi.

"Ukraine is proving that it can indeed restore justice and ensure the necessary pressure on the aggressor," Zelensky added.

He did not mention by name Russia's western Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have reportedly seized several villages and are also threatening to take a regional town.

Russia has been struggling to halt a Ukrainian advance in the western Kursk region, despite sending reinforcements with heavy armoury to the region.

More than 76,000 people have already been evacuated from the area, and a "counter-terror" regime imposed across three border regions.

This means authorities in Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions can restrict the movement of people and vehicles and use phone tapping among other measures.

Fighting in Kursk appeared to be continuing overnight, with the region's governor, Aleksei Smirnov, saying early on Sunday that there were injured people in a "treacherous" Ukrainian attack.

He earlier reported that 13 people were injured late on Saturday when the wreckage of a downed Ukrainian missile fell on a multi-storey building in Kursk's regional capital.

The governors of Russia's neighbouring Voronezh and Belgorod regions also reported a Ukrainian drone attack overnight. There was no mention of any injuries.
