  2. About 200 schools had to close in Devon and Cornwallpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    More than 100 schools across Devon had to close or were partially closed due to weather conditions.

    Devon County Council says 133 schools had to close, external, including Tiverton High School, South Dartmoor Community College and Sidmouth College.

    There were 67 schools either closed or partially closed in Cornwall.

  3. 'Snow came barrelling out of nowhere'published at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    Over the border in Somerset, people have also been experiencing heavy snow.

    Somerset Council activated its severe weather emergency protocol, which includes shelter provision for rough sleepers as temperatures plummet.

    The council's travel team said on X there were tricky conditions around the A30 Crewkerne and Yeovil areas.

    Jeremy Payne, who lives high up on Exmoor between Porlock and Lynmouth, says the snow "barrelling out of nowhere" and settled "rather dramatically".

    A whole bunch of what is currently rain in the south and south-east of Ireland will come our way later this evening.

    The biggest threat is that everything will freeze hard tonight.

    There will be a widespread risk of ice first thing tomorrow morning, making for some very tricky driving conditions.

  5. Exeter City unable to train outside due to snowpublished at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell says the club will adapt their preparations for their trip to Wrexham after snow hampered their training.

    The Grecians have been unable to train outside after Exeter and parts of Devon were hit with heavy snowfall.

    City are due to travel to face the League One high-fliers on Saturday and are unbeaten in four games in all competitions.

  6. Closures lifted on A30 - National Highwayspublished at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    Rhodri Williams, operations manager from National Highways, says there are now no closures on the A30.

    "There are still some stranded vehicles which we are working to clear," he says.

    "We have had gritters out since 05:00 this morning."

    Mr Williams says traffic officers and patrols have been covering most of the affected areas and tractors were on stand-by.

    "We are doing our best to deal with customers," he says.

    "Treatments are still taking place with gritters and snow ploughs."

    A community shop in Devon says it kept its doors open to keep serving villagers in the snow.

    Jude Jones, from Christow Community Shop, between Exeter and Haytor, says: "People are coming down for the bare essentials, hot pasties and coffees and people are getting stuff for their neighbours.

    "I'm just going to put someone's shopping in who's unwell at the moment and we'll just nip it up to their house."

  8. A30 east-bound lanes due to reopenpublished at 13:36 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    National Highways says the east-bound carriageway on the A30 from Bodmin to Exeter is expected to reopen "imminently" once a gritter has passed through.

    The west-bound side of the A30 is open.

    In a post on X,, external it says the east-bound carriageway between the B3260 near Okehampton and A382 at Whiddon Down remains difficult to pass in places.

    Heavier snowfall than expected has fallen in parts of Devon and Cornwall.

    About 7,000 properties are without power across Devon, according to National Grid.

    Affected areas include Exeter, Okehampton, Honiton and Crediton.

    Peter Parsons, owner of the Warren House Inn, near Yelverton on Dartmoor, says he did not open the historic pub today due to the snow.

    "We didn't open today purely for the safety of our staff," he says.

    "Tomorrow will be fine but today just wasn't wise."

    Mr Parsons says there has barely been any traffic on the moors today.

    "There's been nothing much moving yet," he says.

  14. Disruption continuing on major roadspublished at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    Major roads in Devon and Cornwall remain covered in snow and ice.

    Snow has settled around the A395 between Launceston and Otterham, while BBC reporter Angela Kalwaites says the A39 through Camelford and Otterham is shut due to heavy snow.

    National Highways is warning drivers to be aware of snowfall on the A30, with several incidents already reported along sections of the road.

    It says traffic was held on the east-bound carriage on the A30, between the A38 near Bodmin and the A395 Kennards House, due to a stranded lorry.

  15. 'No let up in the snow whatsoever in Cornwall'published at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    A blanket of heavy snow has fallen on north and east Cornwall, causing serious problems on the roads and forcing the closure of dozens of schools.

    BBC Radio Cornwall's James Churchfield has a round-up of how the county has fared.

    Storm Bert will bring heavy rain and strong winds to the South West at the weekend, the Met Office says.

    It says 50-75mm of was expected to fall "fairly widely" across both days, adding there was a chance some places over Dartmoor could see between 100-125 mm.

    "Strong southerly winds will accompany the heavy rain and may locally exacerbate impacts," it says.

    Named by Ireland's Met Éireann, Storm Bert is the second named storm of the season.

  17. More gritters being deployed in Devonpublished at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    Jen Murphy, from Devon County Council Highways, says additional gritters are due to set out in the next hour in the Okehampton and Whiddon Down areas.

    She says a "troubleshooting" gritter is also travelling around Exeter.

    "Fallen trees are something that we are seeing quite a few of across the county," she says.

    "Between the rain in the north and the south [and] the weight of the snow on them... we have quite a few routes with fallen trees."

  18. More yellow warnings for ice and heavy rainpublished at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 21 November

    The Met Office has issued further yellow warnings for ice and rain covering parts of Devon and Cornwall.

    It says icy patches may lead to travel disruption in both counties, with a warning in place from 17:00 GMT on Thursday until 10:00 on Friday.

    As Storm Bert hits, a yellow warning for heavy rain comes into force from 06:00 on Saturday, expiring at 23:45 on Sunday.

    The current warning for snow is active until 15:00.

    With no school for some Devon children, people are taking advantage of the snowy conditions.

    I was in Heavitree Park, where the snow really picked up at about 07:00 GMT and has been coming down steadily since then.

    With lots of local schools closed, Heavitree Park is busy with children building snowmen, dogs enjoying a run in the white stuff and the occasional snowball fight.

    Strong easterly winds are also affecting travel, and blowing the snow around on the moors.

    The area of low pressure that has brought the snow is also giving strong and gusty easterly winds, with gusts of between 45-55mph (70-88km/h).

    There are currently high tides on east facing coasts.
