The Conservatives are planning to focus on the economy in the coming week.

Leader David Cameron is expected to say later:

    Quote Message

"If you want political excitement, go to Greece. If you want more showbiz in this election, go to Hollywood. But here and now in the UK I'm focused on something real. A stronger economy. Something that excites millions more: more jobs more homes, more business, more childcare, more security in retirement. I make no apologies for focusing hard on that which is central to everything. When you get a new job, a new home, get a new childcare place or start a new business… now that's truly exiting."

Sadly - we were enjoying this - Andrew Marr has to bring the brief but noisy debate between Boris Johnson and Ed Miliband to an end in a firm, but very British way:

    Quote Message

    Shut up now please. Sorry."

  5. Punch and Judy politics?published at 09:58

Boris Johnson joins Ed Miliband on the Andrew Marr sofa - and a row immediately breaks out on taxes on the wealthiest.

"I'm in favour of the rich paying as much tax as is consistent with a successful economy," claims Boris.

"Are you for keeping non-dom status?" Ed Miliband asks.

"Is this the same Ed Miliband who was in the Treasury with Gordon Brown?" Boris throws back.

  6. 'Rent control' planspublished at 09:52

Turning to Labour's proposal to cap private rents, Andrew Marr says economists agree that controls don’t work.

"There are 11 million people in 'generation rent'," Ed Miliband replies. "They've been forgotten."

He "doesn't buy" the argument that landlords will "jack up rents" before a cap comes in.

He claims a similar policy has worked in the Republic of Ireland and insists: "This will work."

  7. 'I lead my party'published at 09:51

Andrew Marr suggests that trades union-backed Labour MPs are going to be "very hostile" to cuts if Labour forms a government.

    Ed Miliband dismisses this:

    Quote Message

I lead my party and I decide what happens in my party."

  9. Labour spending cutspublished at 09:47

Ed Miliband says it is "wrong" to suggest that he is "a taxing and borrowing politician".

Labour would balance the books and "get the net debt falling", he insists.

He accuses the Conservatives of having "sprayed around" spending commitments and calls Labour's plan "fully costed".

    Quote Message

I'm going to be cutting spending outside key protected areas, and no Labour politician has gone into an election promising that."

  10. Budget would 'not be written by the SNP'published at 09:44

Ed Miliband draws a comparison between the SNP and the Conservatives.

One party is trying to set Scotland against England while the other is setting England against Scotland, he claims.

He says he is aiming for "a majority Labour government". He repeats that he is"not interested" in doing deals with the SNP and says Labour would put forward its proposals and it would be for other parties to decide whether or not to support it.

    Quote Message

"It will be a Labour Queen's Speech. It will be a Labour Budget. It's not going to be written by the SNP."

  11. 'Optimistic' Edpublished at 09:42

Ed Miliband, who says he is "optimistic" is on the Andrew Marr Show. He concedes Labour has "challenges in Scotland" - where it trails the SNP in polls - but suggests that Andrew Marr is "getting ahead" of himself by predicting the party's performance.

"I'm not doing deals with the SNP," he adds.

  13. Johnson: Leadership reports 'nonsense'published at 09:40

Boris Johnson says that reports that he is being lined up to imminently become leader of the Conservative Party are "nonsense" and "absolutely trivial by comparison with the choice this country has to make in 11 days time."

When she was on the Marr Show just now Leanne Wood was asked whether the fact that the SNP, Plaid and the Greens all have female leaders means that there is more consensus between the parties.

Ms Wood says the parties would work together regardless of the gender of the leaders.

  17. Labour and the SNPpublished at 09:29

Boris Johnson is challenged on his highlighting the possibility of a Labour/SNP government, "Absolutely reasonably - if you look at what's happening in the British economy and the London economy at the moment it's a story of great success and great progress... but what you've got is a Labour government proposing to come in with a manifesto to put up corporation tax... and there's no way Miliband could conceivably govern except with the help of the SNP... I think it is deeply alarming."

  19. 'No Tory deals'published at 09:26

Leanne Wood says that, like the SNP, Plaid Cymru have "ruled out any deal to prop up a Conservative government".

Wales has "never voted to give the Tories a mandate", she adds.

Plaid "would work with a Labour government but only if they weren't prepared to implement Tory policies".

  20. 'Bozfather'published at 09:24

The Sun on Sunday has a spread on Boris Johnson entitled "The Bozfather". Tom Newton Dunn, political editor of the Sun, said during the newspaper review: "The problem with introducing Boris Johnson is that it invites comparison. People will say, well if he's so good, why don't we get him in [as leader] instead?"

    He's on Andrew Marr now.
