  1. Treasury 'not a fan of ring-fencing tax take'published at 13:38 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    The Guardian

The Guardian has been picking through some Lib Dem promises, external in key policy areas.

On the promise to put a penny on income tax to fund health and social care, home affairs editor Alan Travis notes: "The Treasury has always been hostile to the principle of hypothecated taxes - tying money raised in general taxation to one specific purpose - and the Lib Dems may face a battle to keep the proceeds ringfenced."

He also points out that the Lib Dems' early years proposal offers only 15 hours free childcare to all two-year-olds - half of Labour’s promised 30 hours.

  4. Tension between PM and chancellor 'traditional'published at 13:28 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

Rupert Harrison, a manager at financial services firm Blackrock and former chief of staff to George Osborne, describes the relationship between Theresa May and Philip Hammond as "within the range of tension between No 10 and No 11, part of a historic British tradition".

    Quote Message

I don't think the differences are that large, but maybe David Cameron and George Osborne's chumminess was the exception and this is more in the normal run of things."

  6. Schools are my priority, not students, says Farronpublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    Tim FarronImage source, PA

Tim Farron has been talking to the BBC's Vicky Young about his education plans - and prioritising schoolchildren over students.

    Quote Message

At the moment the government is planning to squirrel away £23bn a year from 2019-20 in savings, perhaps making sure that we put it away for a rainy day. And yet your average head teacher will tell you, it's raining now... What our schools need is hope for the future. And the Liberal Democrats' fully costed programme to put £7bn back into schools and into further education gives us hope."

On whether the Lib Dems are pledging - again - to scrap university tuition fees, Mr Farron said:

    Quote Message

I just think parties should learn that you don't make promises that you cannot keep. And I kept my promise on voting against the rise of tuition fees. But it's about making choices, where do we need to spend our money? And the reality is that our schools at the moment are under enormous pressure."

  7. Scottish Labour could sanction local party over coalitionpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

We reported earlier that Labour councillors in Aberdeen are considering a coalition with Conservatives and independents after the SNP lost overall control in the local elections.

Now Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale says the party may impose sanctions if such a tie-up goes ahead:

  12. Did he really say that? Corbyn's NHS quotepublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

Jeremy Corbyn just put out this tweet - and referred to the same quotation in his manifesto launch yesterday - but according to Dr Mathew Thomson, NHS history expert at the University of Warwick, Bevan never said that.

“[The quote] comes from the 1997 TV play about Bevan, Food for Ravens, written by Trevor Griffiths,” says Thomson.

  17. McDonnell: Trickle-down economics has failedpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 17 May 2017

    McDonnell

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell is speaking in Lincoln, where he begins by apologising for being late: "A Tube broke down and we missed the train - that won't happen under Labour."

He goes on: "I'm so proud of Labour's manifesto" which represents "a break with so-called liberalism" and trickle-down economics, as "we know that has failed".

He claims that the "government can't feed its population, wages are falling, pensioners are in poverty - and I call that a disgrace".

His comments about "ending the privatisation of the NHS", in particular, draw loud cheers.
