  1. Amber Rudd: No link between foreign policy and attackspublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 26 May 2017

Home Secretary Amber Rudd is asked if what Jeremy Corbyn is saying is similar to what Theresa May means when she says a Conservative government would not repeat the failed policies of the past.

    She responds:

    Quote Message

There is no connection between the UK's foreign policy and the efforts it puts in to its international relations and the events on Monday night. Look at 9/11, at countries like Sweden and Finland which have also been victims of attacks. What we have here is a grotesque ideology from Daesh which is trying to weaponsie young people in our society."

    Tim FarronImage source, Sky

The Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has criticised Jeremy Corbyn for a speech today in which Mr Corbyn spoke of the connections between Britain's wars abroad and terrorism at home.

Mr Farron, campaigning in the north-west of England, said: "It seems to me that to choose to make a political point on the back [of the Manchester Arena] attack was wrong".

Mr Farron said: "I disagree with Jeremy Corbyn's point but I disagree even more strongly with his timing of making that point.

"It may be tempting for politicians to point the finger at one another about the events that happened on Monday, but this is a time for our country to stand together and come together."

  7. Greens praise Corbyn speechpublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 26 May 2017

    BartleyImage source, EPA

The Green Party responded to Jeremy Corbyn's speech on foreign policy and terrorism with praise, but pointed out only 11 Labour MPs voted against the military intervention in Libya.

Jonathan Bartley, Green Party co-leader, said: "The responsibility for terror attacks like that in Manchester lies solely with those who perpetrate these heinous crimes, but it is important to look at the wider picture too.

"The Labour leader is right to point to failed western intervention as a cause of instability. Indeed when you look at the Libyan intervention you see failure at almost every level.

"If we're going to beat terrorism we need both adequate security measures at home and a look at how Britain's role in world affairs can have serious unintended consequences which lead to greater insecurity."

He said voting Green would be "voting for someone who will seriously scrutinise the march to war of any government".

  8. SNP: Overseas actions have an impact at homepublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 26 May 2017

    BBC News Channel

    Gethins

He tells the BBC News Channel terrorists are "the only ones responsible for terrorism" but that "any action we take overseas will always have an impact on what happens to us at home".

He gives the example of Libya - the country the Manchester bomber had family connections with - as an example.

    Quote Message

In terms of our foreign policy in recent years, we need to be mindful of our bombing of Libya and failing to rebuild it afterwards."

    Jeremy CorbynImage source, Sky

Jeremy Corbyn told his audience that "many experts" including those in Britain's intelligence and security services saw connections between wars the UK has been involved in abroad and terrorism at home.

Mr Corbyn said that that in "no way reduces the guilt of those who attack our children" and that those terrorists would "forever be reviled" for their actions.

But, he said, "an informed understanding of the causes of terror" was an "essential part of an effective response" that would protect the security of people here and which "fights rather than fuels terrorism."
