    BBC Newsnight

The SNP's Mary McAllan says that her party does not want a generation gap to exist.

So he then turns to more bread and butter issues, highlighting "restoring housing benefit to under-21s [and] also by sustaining the triple lock on pensions".

    BBC Newsnight

Labour spokesperson Chi Onwurah says: "Both young and old have been failed by the Tory government.

"But the truth is that this looks set to be the first generation that looks set to be poorer than its parents.

"Clearly there is a divide and it is up to government - a Labour government - to make sure that we see that we're stronger together and that the many win not the few."

  11. Parties 'doubling-down' on main messagespublished at 23:01 British Summer Time 30 May 2017

    Laura Kuenssberg
    BBC political editor

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg says the parties are now "doubling down" on their core arguments.

She says: "Theresa May is saying again and again: 'Trust me on Brexit, trust me on Brexit - and in case you hadn't realised - trust ME not him on Brexit.

"And for Jeremy Corbyn the message is really: 'Give me a chance. Think about public services and the strains we know they're under. But give me a chance because I could be different.'

"I think clearly there has been a bit of a shift and we're seeing from those sky-high poll leads at the beginning of the campaign there has been a shift. People are less forgiving of Theresa May. I think there's more scepticism towards her.

"But in terms of the broad picture, I think neither the most pessimistic person in Tory headquarters nor the most optimistic person in Labour headquarters would be willing to bet very much on anything other than some form of a Tory win. But things have shifted in the last 10 days and they may shift again.

"The parties are going back to their basic messages, their safe territory. But what voters will make of that? It's up to them."
