    Quote Message

When you discover that the victims include not just people who are from London but people from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France, Spain, and other parts of the world, you realise what a truly global city London is. The acts of these three men on Saturday night was cowardly, was evil, and I'm angry and furious that these three men are seeking to justify their actions by using the faith that I belong to.

  7. Norman Lamb welcomes UKIP councillor's endorsementpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

Norman Lamb, who's hoping to be re-elected as MP for North Norfolk, says he's delighted to have the support of UKIP's local government spokesman Peter Reeve.

In a video released this morning, Mr Reeve, who is a councillor representing Ramsey on Huntingdonshire District Council, external in Cambridgeshire, backed Mr Lamb, saying the Lib Dem candidate was "a man who will stand up for North Norfolk" during Brexit negotiations and on issues like the NHS and social care.

Mr Lamb describes it as an "incredibly welcome endorsement... hugely significant", adding that there'd been an assumption that the vast majority of those who voted UKIP in 2015 would head straight to the Conservatives at this election and Mr Reeve's support was a "challenge to that assumption".

He went on to say that the constituency needed a strong voice to "challenge to government on chronic under-funding of the NHS and their plans for social care".

Mr Lamb said: "I think that Peter recognises my track record on these issues and the dedication I have shown to North Norfolk over the last 16 years.

"Despite our differences on a number of issues, Peter is a principled and respected figure in UKIP and in local government – and I am delighted to have his support."

Two other parties are fighting for the constituency. Labour is fielding Stephen Burke and James Wild is standing for the Conservatives. The Green Party has decided not to field a candidate in order to help Norman Lamb retain his seat.

UKIP had also chosen not to field a candidate, having previously asked people to "lend" their support to the Conservatives in order to unseat Mr Lamb in North Norfolk.

Opposition parties in Wales say cuts to police budgets should be reversed to boost the fight against terrorism.

The so-called Islamic State has said it carried out the van and knife attack in London in which seven victims died.

Labour's Stephen Doughty said his party would hire 20,000 more police officers, but David Davies said the Conservatives had protected funding for intelligence.

Plaid Cymru and the Lib Dems warned that Brexit should not put international co-operation at risk.

  16. More on Corbyn call for May to step downpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

Leaving a recreation centre near Middlesbrough, Jeremy Corbyn was asked to clarify his remarks calling for Theresa May to resign. He told the BBC:

    Quote Message

There's an election on Thursday, that's the chance. There's a call being made by people in the emergency services who say that the cuts in police numbers during her time in the Home Office are appalling and that has to be challenged, and has been challenged."

Asked if Mr Corbyn was calling for Mrs May to go right now, the Labour leaders says: "We're calling for a restoration of police numbers and there's a call being made for her to go because of what she's done on police numbers."

  17. Former terrorism legislation reviewer calls for return of control orderspublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

    The Daily Politics

    Lord Carlile

Lord Alex Carlile, the former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, says it's absolutely clear to all those involved in counter-terrorism issues that the police and security services have the resources they need.

He called for a return to control orders - which detained foreign terrorism suspects without trial - claiming "they saved lives".

But former Conservative justice minister Dominic Raab claimed the powers "leaked like a sieve" and were attacked by the courts.

If there's any evidence that any powers need to be looked at "we'll do so", he said.

Lord Carlile said he could not say if control orders would have dealt with the terror attackers on Saturday, but he said the powers acted "well within human rights leglislation and I'm telling you they work"
