A senior German MP says Britian should be given time to form a stable government before Brexit negoitiations begin.

Speaking on German radio, Stephan Mayer said he was very surprised at what he described as a landslide.

"It means instability for Britain. Officially Theresa May is still the partner in Brexit negotiations but the political reality is different after this disastrous defeat.

"I can't imagine that May will be able to remain PM. That's why it would be wrong to put pressure on GB. I think we should give them time to form a stable government."
