  5. May 'should stay' as prime minister says former Tory leaderpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 11 June 2017

    Mark Lobel
    BBC political reporter

    Lord Howard

The former Conservative leader Lord Howard has said that Theresa May “not only can stay but should stay” on as prime minister.

Speaking on Radio 4’s The World This Weekend, he said: “I think it would be immensely disruptive if we had either a Conservative leadership election or a general election during the Brexit process.”

Mr Howard rejected accusations Theresa May was a lame duck, and said: “No I don’t at all think she is a lame duck.”

Asked if Theresa May could stay on for a full five year term, Mr Howard said "we’d have to see what the position is in two years’ time” after a Brexit deal has been agreed, by which time “who knows, she may have achieved a position of authority".

He reiterated: “I don’t think we should have a change of leadership. I don’t think we should have a general election either until the Brexit negotiations are complete.”

    BBC Sunday Politics

While there are many unexpected goings-on in UK politics right now, there seems to be little that can raise an eyebrow.

But there are no plans, that we know of, for Julia Hartley-Brewer to host the Sunday Politics, despite her trying out Andrew Neil's presenter seat on its temporary set in the Westminster open air.

However, Mr Neil will be missing - for just one week only - from Thursday's This Week and next weekend's Sunday Politics. He will soon be back on both programmes.

    BBC Sunday Politics

Sinn Fein's Mairtin O Muilleoir has criticised a DUP-Conservative arrangement suggesting the Northern Irish party would be pulling the strings.

He said: "I do think this new coalition, whether it is a coalition of chaos or whatever it is, between the DUP and the Tories I think it will mean an assault on issues of rights, issues of respect and it will make a deal harder undoubtedly and there will be a price to pay".

Prime Minister Theresa MayImage source, Reuters

Theresa May is set to reshuffle her Cabinet this afternoon, days after seeing the Conservatives' majority wiped out in the General Election.

Chancellor Philip Hammond and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson have already been confirmed as remaining in the Cabinet, alongside Home Secretary Amber Rudd, Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon and Brexit Secretary David Davis.

It is thought any changes will be tempered by the disappointing election result, which has seen the PM's authority considerably undermined - with some calls for her departure.

  16. Shadow foreign secretary expects Corbyn to be 'inclusive'published at 14:06 British Summer Time 11 June 2017

    The World This Weekend
    Radio 4 programme

Chief whip Nick Brown has urged Jeremy Corbyn to stay loyal to his existing shadow cabinet and be careful of appointing his critics in the parliamentary party.

Emily Thornberry, a member of that existing shadow cabinet, says: "I think that Jeremy has always approached his leadership in an inclusive way,"

There are many talented people in the party and "we need to use their talents as best they can", she adds.

Does this mean that Yvette Cooper could be set for a return as shadow home secretary, as has been rumoured?

"You'll have to ask Jeremy, not me," Ms Thornberry says.

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry says Theresa May called the election to get a mandate on Brexit but "she was very kind of cool about not having a deal at all".

Now, Ms Thornberry tells The World This Weekend, "she doesn't have a mandate for that".

Would Labour talk to Conservatives who favour a so-called "soft Brexit"? She envisages all kinds of conversations in the future but declines to be specfic.

"A strong Brexit means we look after people's jobs," the shadow foreign secretary adds.

There is no parliamentary majority for such an approach, he says, adding: "That sort of chaotic Brexit is off the table."

    Quote Message

People like me would love to stay in the single market and the customs union."
