As we speak, Jeremy Corbyn has also reshuffled his shadow cabinet.

All the major jobs are staying the same.

The headline announcement is that his former opponent Owen Smith, who challenged Mr Corbyn last year, is returning as shadow Northern Ireland secretary.

There are also new roles for Andrew Gwynne and Ian Lavery, who ran the party's election campaign, while newly-elected Lesley Laird is shadow scottish secretary.

  9. Tim Farron on 'remaining faithful to Christ'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

Just to recap on the breaking news from the last hour.

Tim Farron is to stand down as Lib Dem leader, triggering a leadership contest this summer.

Speaking in front of his colleagues, he spoke of the quandary he faced "living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader".

Remember, he faced repeated questions during the election campaign about his views on gay sex and abortion.

Here is a summary of what he said this evening:

    Quote Message

"The consequences of the focus on my faith is that I have found myself torn between living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader. A better, wiser person may have been able to deal with this more successfully, to remain faithful to Christ while leading a political party in the current environment. To be a leader, particularly of a progressive Liberal party in 2017 and to live as a committed Christian and to hold faithful to the Bible's teaching has felt impossible for me."

    Tim Farron speaking in London

As we reported just now, Tim Farron has stepped down as leader of the Liberal Democrats after the general election.

In a statement, he said he was "torn between living as a faithful Christian and serving as a political leader".

He said he should have dealt "more wisely" with questions relating to his faith during the election campaign, including his views on gay sex.

He insisted he had taken the decision voluntarily and he retained the support of his party. Read more
