Boris Johnson was accused on Islamophobia last year after saying Muslim women wearing burkas "look like letter boxes"

Gary Robertson says there is a third candidate, one who wrote about Muslim women wearing the niqab and used the line it was ridiculous that people would go around looking like letterboxes.

"That of course is Boris Johnson and he's at the heart of your party's problem with this, isn't he?"

Mr Carlaw replies he does not accept that.

He insists he will judge the prime minister on what he says and does as prime minister, and not on what he has said in the past.

The Good Morning Scotland presenter asks if Mr Carlaw would ever use the terms "tank-top bum boy" or "walkabout piccaninnies" or "watermelon smiles", or would he talk about Muslim women being "bank robbers".

He replies no to all these questions and further ones.

  2. 'There are questions here about your vetting procedures, aren't there?published at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2019

Gary now asks about the suspension of a Conservative party election candidate over alleged anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and homophobic comments he made seven years ago.

"There are questions here about your vetting procedures, aren't there?"

Mr Carlaw replies the vetting procedures are quite comprehensive, adding the party has to respond when information that has not been disclosed by the candidate comes to light.

The Scottish Conservative interim leader insists he has acted "decisively, immediately and without favour".

  3. Suspension of Tory candidate over 'anti-Muslim' comment raisedpublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2019

Gary Robertson pivots to the vetting process for candidates, citing Flora Scarabello's suspension after she was accused of using "anti-Muslim language".

He asks if Mr Carlaw has heard the recording of the relevant phone call, but Mr Carlaw says he has not due to not having the copyright.

The Scottish Conservative interim leader says he has seen the transcript and she said she had a "problem with Muslim people", adding that was the entire remark which was enough for the party to take action.

  4. 'Questions had to be asked'published at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2019

The father of victim Jack Merritt has said some of what Boris Johnson has said has been "vile propaganda" and called for the attack not to be used as a political football, says Gary Robertson.

"I think if I was a father I'd feel much the same way, but Gary I watched the absolute splurge from Labour politicians on twitter in the immediate aftermath of this attack questioning the prime minister and blaming it on him," replies the Scottish Conservative interim leader.

Questions had to be asked, says Mr Carlaw, and the prime minister has responded.

  6. We begin with the political fallout from the terror attack on London Bridgepublished at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2019

Good Morning Scotland presenter Gary Robertson gets us underway by asking Scottish Conservative interim leader Jackson Carlaw about the recent terror attack in London.

Mr Robertson says convicted terrorist Usman Khan was released under a Conservative government and says it is a Conservative failure, isn't it?

Mr Carlaw says there was a window between 2008 and 2012 when Usman Khan was released.

Surely the buck has to stop with the Conservative prime minister, presses the Mr Robertson.

If you want to be factually correct his sentence was imposed under the 2008 legislation and you can't go back and retrospectively change that, replies Mr Carlaw.
