  2. Scotland Leaders' Debate: Independence after Brexit?published at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2019

    Brexit ScotlandImage source, bbc

Independence and Brexit inevitably featured in tonight's debate, but perhaps not as much as might have been expected.

Audience member Matthew Brickell asked if it was inevitable that Scotland would vote for independence if the UK eventually leaves the European Union.

Willie Rennie doesn't want to see that: "We shouldn't mount chaos upon chaos."

Jackson Carlaw was also against this citing the once in a generation pledge made by the SNP.

"It's not democracy if people are not allowed to change their minds when the circumstances have changed," countered Nicola Sturgeon.

Richard Leonard didn't get a chance to respond but Scottish Labour has said it opposes indyref2 in the "early years" of a Labour government.

  3. Scotland Leader Debate: Trust and lying feature stronglypublished at 21:33 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2019

The first question tonight was on the mistrust of politicians.

    • Nicola Sturgeon thought politicians "have forgotten we're opponents, not enemies".
    • It's "right and correct" to question everything politicians say according to Jackson Carlaw.
    • Richard Leonard said that "part of leadership is listening".
    • The mistrust of politicians "deeply concerns me", said Willie Rennie.

The leaders were also asked: Should it be a criminal offence to lie in Parliament?

Short and snappy answers from the four leaders to this:

    • Richard Leonard: Prisons are already overcrowded so he is not sure locking up politicians is the right thing to do, adding it should perhaps be a civil crime
    • Jackson Carlaw: No, but it's a resignation matter
    • Nicola Sturgeon: It is not something politicians should do regardless of whether it is an offence; she also criticises Boris Johnson for lying
    • Willie Rennie: Agrees with the first minister about Boris Johnson

About a third of the record four million people across Scotland who are registered to vote in Thursday's general election are not expected to do so.

Many simply won't get round to voting this time, while others have never voted.

But with disillusionment with politics and politicians said to be on the rise, some say they no longer want to endorse what they claim is a broken system.

Will tonight's debate have changed their minds? We'll find out on Friday!
