    Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson has narrowly lost her Dunbartonshire East seat to the SNP's Amy Callaghan by 149 votes.

    Ms Swinson, became the Lib Dem's first female leader in July.

    She said for millions of people around the country the election results would bring "dread and dismay".

    The Lib Dems are forecast by the BBC to win 13 seats - one more than in the 2017 election.

    Ms Swinson, 39, who had started the election campaign with the claim she could be the next prime minister, said she "will be making further remarks later today".

    John Hayes has been re-elected as the MP for South Holland & The Deepings, with an increased majority.

    The Conservative candidate beat Labour's Mark Popple by 30,838 votes, 5,941 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

    Davina Kirby of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Martin Blake came fourth.

    Voter turnout was down by 1.2 percentage points since the last general election.

    More than 49,000 people, 64.7% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    Two of the five candidates, Martin Blake (Green) and Rick Stringer (independent) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

    He thanks his family and close friends and his wife "for all she puts up with because of the way the media behaves".

    "But I want to say this - in the election campaign we put forward a manifesto of hope.

    "However, Brexit has so polarised debate it has overridden so much of normal political debate."

    We heard earlier that voter turnout in the closely contested Lincoln seat was up on last time and one polling station had to stay open late to allow everyone to vote.

    That view is backed by the city's returning officer Angela Andrews. She said she'd never seen a queue at the close of polling like the one today:

    That figure is slightly up on 2017 when 66.1% of the electorate cast their vote and saw Labour's Karen Lee take the seat from the Conservative's Karl McCartney.
