    Julie Marson has been elected MP for Hertford & Stortford, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with an increased majority.

    The new MP beat Labour's Chris Vince by 19,620 votes. This was more than Mark Prisk’s 19,035 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

    Chris Lucas of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Lucy Downes came fourth.

    Voter turnout was up by 0.1 percentage points since the last general election.

    More than 60,000 people, roughly three-quarters of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    Three of the six candidates, Lucy Downes (Green), Alistair Lindsay (UKIP) and Brian Percival (independent) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

    Cheryl Gillan has been re-elected as the MP for Chesham & Amersham, with a decreased majority.

    The Conservative candidate beat Liberal Democrat Dan Gallagher by 16,223 votes, 5,917 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

    Matt Turmaine of the Labour Party came third and the Green Party's Alan Booth came fourth.

    Voter turnout was down by 0.3 percentage points since the last general election.

    Gagan Mohindra has been elected MP for Hertfordshire South West, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with a decreased majority.

    The new MP beat independent candidate David Gauke by 14,408 votes. This was less than Mr Gauke’s 19,550 vote majority in the 2017 general election. The former Conservative MP subsequently lost his place in the party over his Brexit views and fought the seat as an independent.

    Ali Aklakul of the Labour Party came third and Liberal Democrat Sally Symington came fourth.

    Voter turnout was up by 1.3 percentage points since the last general election.

    Former Justice Secretary David Gauke is another big name to lose his seat overnight.

    He had been a Tory and a major part of both David Cameron's and Theresa May's government.

    But he was another rebel booted out by Boris Johnson for trying to stop a no-deal Brexit in the Commons earlier this year.

    He ran as an independent in his seat of Hertfordshire South West and gained a lot of praise for his amusing Twitter videos throughout the campaign.

    However, it wasn't enough, and while he secured almost 16,000 votes, his Tory successor, Gagan Mohindra, took more than 30,000.

    Liberal Democrat Daisy Cooper has won the St Albans seat, beating Conservative Anne Main with a majority of 6,293.

    Ms Main had held the seat since 2005, but it was a target seat for the Lib Dems with leader Jo Swinson visiting the constituency.

    Ms Cooper won the seat with a 10.8% swing from the Conservatives.

    Voter turnout was down by 1.4 percentage points since the last general election.

    The former MP for Luton South Gavin Shuker said he was "disappointed" by the election result.

    Former Tory Dominic Grieve, who fought many battles against Brexit in the Commons, has lost his seat.

    He was once the party's Attorney General but was booted out by Boris Johnson earlier this year after he backed a bill to try to stop a no-deal Brexit.

    Mr Grieve ran as an independent for his seat of Beaconsfield and won the support of more than 16,000 voters.

    But he was beaten by the new Tory candidate Joy Morrissey, who won with 32,477 votes.

    The former Conservative MP for St Albans Anne Main said she is "very disappointed" to have lost her seat.

    The Liberal Democrats gained the seat from the Tories with Daisy Cooper being the city's newly elected MP.

    Ms Cooper received 28,867 votes while Mrs Main had 22,574 votes.

    "I'm very disappointed. I've given my heart and soul to St Albans," Ms Main said.

    "It was pitched as a remain vote in St Albans and that is what people voted for but it's not really going to make a difference now the Conservatives can carry through with a mandate and a majority."
