Karla Ortiz, a young Hispanic US citizen, was also given an opportunity to speak with her undocumented mother, Francisca.

Anastasia Somoza, an advocate for Americans with intellectual and developmental disabilities, gave a moving speech after a video was played showing Republican presidential rival Donald Trump making fun of a reporter with a disability.

"Donald Trump has shown us who he really is. And I honestly feel bad for anyone with that much hate in their heart," she said.

Ms Somoza was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spastic quadriplegia at birth, and uses a wheelchair. She first met President Bill Clinton in 1993 at a town hall meeting for children and later interned for Hillary Clinton.

"I know we will show each other, and the world, who we really are in November, when we choose genuine strength and thoughtful leadership over fear and division," she said.

"Donald Trump doesn’t see me, he doesn’t hear me, and he definitely doesn’t speak for me," she added.

The Democrat, who has largely kept a lid on his comedy background since being elected to the Senate in 2009, also joked about Trump University.

"And Trump University is about more than just bilking people,” Senator Franken joked. “Although trust me, you will get bilked. It’s also about learning directly from success experts like Scott Baio, Mike Tyson and, of course, a life-sized cardboard cut-out of Mr. Trump himself".

While California Governor Jerry Brown is in Philadelphia for the DNC this week, the largely Democratic state has been left in the hands of the ninth-ranking state official.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, the state's schools chief, became California's acting governor on Monday, the Los Angeles Times reports, external.

California law states that a governor must be within state borders to hold powers of the office. Typically when Governor Brown is out of state, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom takes the reins.

However, Mr Newsom and eight higher-ranking state officials, who are all Democrats, traveled to Philadelphia for the four-day convention.

“Don’t worry, you’re in safe hands,” Mr Torlakson said of the rare situation.

Social media users and Democratic delegates are criticising supporters of Bernie Sanders for interrupting remarks delivered by black speakers. Ohio Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, who is African-American, was forced to use some of her time at the podium to ask protesters for "respect" after they began chanting their support for Senator Bernie Sanders.

While Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings spoke about his personal background and the importance of diversity in the Democrat Party, protesters chanted "No TPP" to show their opposition to a controversial trade deal.

Hillary Clinton now opposes TPP, as does Senator Sanders.

  10. An inside look at one of the unlikely speakerspublished at 01:09 British Summer Time 26 July 2016

The speaker now is undocumented migrant Astrid Silva.

When she was mentioned by President Barack Obama in his key speech announcing his controversial immigration plans in November 2014, the BBC was with her and captured the moment of surprise - and emotion - when he did.

Astrid Silva knew the president would be addressing her and millions of other undocumented immigrants across the country, but she didn't expect him to mention her specifically by name.

President Obama described Ms Silva as a "striving, hopeful immigrant", leading Ms Silva to break down crying while watching the speech with her father, who faces deportation.

In an interview broadcast on Monday evening on Spanish-language network Telemundo, Hillary Clinton's running mate Tim Kaine said Mr Trump talks of Latinos like they're "second-class citizens".

He said Mrs Clinton would begin the task of reforming the immigration system within her first 100 days in the White House.

She has promised to extend President Obama's proposed plan by offering undocumented immigrants a path to US citizenship.

    Quote Message

Hillary will do that within the first 100 days of her administration. There will be a huge effort in Congress to achieve that reform and, because of my experience in the Senate, with colleagues, I will work very hard with Congress to help in those efforts.
