British writer Nick Hornby has been talking to BBC News about his Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay, for Brooklyn.

He was nominated in the same category in 2010 for An Education, but admits nobody ever remembers and "that when you're a writer it means very little".

He said the Brooklyn took five years to bring to the screen because "nobody would fund us".

"When I started this Saoirse was 14!" he joked, adding that it was "wonderful kismet" that by the time the film was made Ronan was old enough to take the role.

He paid tribute to leading lady Ronan, saying it was "a central performance as good as anything we've seen".
