  1. Sir Bruce Forsyth: Corbett's death 'one of saddest days'published at 13:04

Corbett and Forsyth performing together in a 1980s show

Sir Bruce Forsyth has spoken emotionally about his friend, colleague and fellow golf enthusiast Ronnie Corbett.

    He told the BBC:

    Quote Message

One of the saddest days of my life. Ronnie was a friend, someone I admired so much. It's a very, very sad day. I'm going to miss him like crazy, I really will.

Sir Bruce said one of the first times he saw him was when Corbett was working in the cast of a Danny La Rue show in the West End, and said the pair had been "great together".

    Quote Message

That was one of the wonderful things about Ronnie - he was very adaptable. He could work with anybody, even me. We always say a one-off, but he certainly was a one-off and a half. He really was.

Sir Bruce added that he loved to rehearse with Corbett and also that the pair had "some lovely times" golfing.

He said the "four candles" sketch was one of the all-time greats, describing Corbett as "such a genius".

"He could work with anybody, Ronnie, because his personality would always gel with the other performer," added Sir Bruce.

  2. Michael Palin: 'His sense of comedy timing was absolutely perfect'published at 12:57 British Summer Time 31 March 2016

Michael Palin was a writer on The Two Ronnies, alongside Terry Jones.

He spoke to BBC Radio 4's World at One about their working relationship and friendship:

    Quote Message

"He loved whatever he did. He was a marvellous, sharp, concise performer. His sense of comedy timing was absolutely perfect, which is why he worked so well with John [Cleese] and with Ronnie Barker.

    Quote Message

Ronnie had a great sense of silliness, which I responded to. He could also do the serious stuff but there was a lovely sort of mischief. His eyes twinkled…and he was absolutely delightful to play with and against. And he was also a good friend.

  3. Former BBC chairman pays tribute to 'one of the all-time greats'published at 12:50

Former BBC chairman Michael Grade has spoken of his sadness at the loss of the "huge talent" that was Ronnie Corbett.

He told the BBC news channel Corbett was "one of the all-time greats of British comedy, no question".

    Quote Message

I'm so sad for Anne and the family - and the nation, really. We've lost a great friend and entertainer.

    Quote Message

He learned his craft the hard way. He was a master of comedy of all kinds - TV, cabaret, variety. He even played in a sitcom, Sorry!, for me for the BBC, which was wonderful.

    Quote Message

[He was] the most wonderful man. A great talent.

As one half of The Two Ronnies, Corbett was part of one of biggest comedy double acts of all time, alongside Ronnie Barker.

Among the pair's most memorable sketches were "Four Candles" and "Nothing's Too Much Trouble".

Barker first worked with Corbett in The Frost Report and Frost on Sunday, programmes for which he also wrote scripts. In 1971 they teamed up for the first Two Ronnies.

A total of 12 series of the comedy show were made.

At its peak, more than 17 million viewers tuned in to see the programme, which aired until 1987.

The duo reunited for The Two Ronnies Sketchbook shortly before Barker's death in 2005.

Yesterday we told you how the new head of the British Board of Film Classification said he would give Watership Down a PG rating instead of a U if it was released today.

And many of you agreed with him that it was too upsetting for young children to watch.

Although others thought he was talking nonsense.

Instead, the singer is to appear as a special guest at the annual Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza, which festival organiser Michael Eavis set up to thank local residents for putting up with the disruption of the main event.

Cullum joins Van Morrison on the bill for the August event.

    Cullum had this to say:

    Quote Message

I am delighted to be playing as part of Glastonbury’s Abbey Extravaganza and opening for the legendary Van Morrison. Glastonbury is a festival close to my heart and to be a part of the support that is behind such a distinguished, world class event is as important as the festival itself.

    Quote Message

Music, community, love and consideration are the cornerstones of Glastonbury and it’s events such as the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza that go to prove this.

Beverley Callard, who plays Liz McDonald on Coronation Street, is taking time off from the soap.

The news came after she wrote on Twitter that she had been "battling the demons of depression" - and that one of the drugs she has been taking has been withdrawn.

She suggested on Twitter it had been stopped for financial reasons and also thanked fans for their support.

A Coronation Street source confirmed the temporary departure after the medication was discontinued, saying: "She is taking some time off whilst her doctors look for a suitable alternative."

    The Sun

He looks like an X Factor judge, he sounds like an X Factor judge, and now it seems - if reports are to be believed - that Louis Walsh is to become an X Factor judge once again.

BBC Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw announced last month that he was leaving the show after one series.

And now The Sun is reporting that Walsh is being lined up to take his place after being sacked from the ITV programme last year.

He's said to have flown to LA for talks with Simon Cowell.

A source from the show told The Sun: "He’s doing all he can to sign him for the next series. Louis is up for it.

"Simon wants an older person back after admitting last year’s series was too youthful, which might have made more people go to Strictly."

  16. Hungarian Noble Prize winner Imre Kertesz diespublished at 09:37 British Summer Time 31 March 2016

    Imre KerteszImage source, AFP

Hungarian Noble Literature Prize winner Imre Kertesz has died at the aged of 86.

The novelist drew on his experiences in Nazi concentration camps for many of his works, having been incarcerated in Auschwitz as a teenager.

Fateless was the first in a trilogy of books in which Kertesz reflected on the Holocaust. A Kudarc (Fiasco) and Kaddish For a Child Not Born were written later and had the narrator looking back at a life scarred by the Holocaust.

He won the Noble Prize in 2002.

Krisztian Nyary, director of Kertesz's publishers Magveto Publishing, told AFP:

    Quote Message

Kertesz was one of the 20th Century's most influential Hungarian writers, not just through his works but through his thoughts and worldview as well.

  17. Hans Zimmer on Batman v Superman dialogue woespublished at 09:20 British Summer Time 31 March 2016

Uber film composer Hans Zimmer has said he is not to blame if music drowns out dialogue during a movie - instead calling out inferior cinema sound systems.

There has been criticism levelled at the muted dialogue in Batman v Superman, for which he composed the score.

Speaking to the BBC's Rebecca Jones, he said: "I don't have control over it."

    Quote Message

"Nobody sets out to make an incomprehensible movie. When we mix the film we mix it to the highest possible standard and we can hear every word, but that doesn't mean that every cinema has the same speakers... so what's our choice? Create for the lowest common denominator or tell people 'make your sound systems better'.

It must be every magician's worst nightmare, doing a trick in front of an audience which doesn't quite go to plan.

But that's what happened to Dynamo during his live stage show at London's O2 arena.

He asked audience member Tom to help him with a trick that saw Dynamo put his volunteer's mobile phone inside a bottle.

    Impressive stuff.

But then when Dynamo asked another member of the public on the stage to ring Tom's mobile... nothing happened.

The magician could be heard saying he hoped there was enough mobile reception before the trick was tried again, but the phone just wouldn't ring.

"It's a live magic show people, anything could happen," he told the audience.
