  1. Carlyle hails 'absolutely fantastic' Trainspotting 2 scriptpublished at 09:48 British Summer Time 11 April 2016

    Robert Carlyle

Trainspotting fans are in for a treat, according to Robert Carlyle, who memorably played the psychopathic Begbie in the 1996 original film.

Its sequel, which starts filming next month, will reveal what happened to the group of drug addicts living in squalor in Edinburgh.

"What I will say is that all the characters are exactly where you would want them to be," he said.

"The strength of this new script is the fact that the narrative is a bit stronger than it was in the original. This has maybe got a wee bit more to it in terms of what they've been up to through these years. I think it's an absolutely fantastic script. John Hodge has done a wonderful job, as he did with the original."

Carlyle appeared with Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh to celebrate the film's 20th anniversary at The Usher Hall in Edinburgh.

They described Begbie as a uniquely Scottish thug who cannot be found in their adopted homes in America.

The duo added that Begbie thrives on up close and personal violence, in contrast to the US where violence is "all about the gun".

For those who didn't see it, it's a black comedy which also starred Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller.

Its soundtrack was a best seller and it's also ranked 10th in the Britsh Film Institute's top 100 British films of the 20th Century.

The musical version of Billy Elliot has been a firm favourite in the West End since it premiered in 2005.

But this weekend saw its final performance in London as the show closed so it can go on a full tour of the UK and Ireland.

Sir Elton John, who wrote the music for the stage version of the hit film, attended the final performance at the Victoria Palace Theatre with his husband David Furnish.

An extended curtain call saw 32 of the 42 actors who have played Billy over the years join the current cast.

Reviewing the final performance for today's Guardian, Mark Lawson wrote, external:

    Quote Message

A show that offered theatregoers several different reasons for potentially disliking it – pro-ballet and anti-Thatcherite attitudes, strong language and reliance on child stars – turned every negative into a positive... the musical will surely be revived in London at some point in the future, because anyone interested in culture needs to get Billy Elliot on their dance card.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has proved no match for Melissa McCarthy's comedy The Boss.

The latest figures from the US box office reveal McCarthy's movie about a business mogul trying to rebound after being convicted of insider trading skimmed into the lead with a $23.5m (£16.6m) debut.

Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill's men of steel and whatever Batman's suit is made from have had very mixed reviews, and this week managed $23.4m (£16.5m)

Creature animation Zootopia (or Zootropolis as it's known here) was third with $14.4m (£10.2m), followed by comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, with $6.4 m (£4.5m).

Hardcore Henry came in fifth place with $5.1m (£3.6m)

    1) Someone who likes to have a flutter in the Grand National every year
