  1. 'Lazy' Grimes plays Radio 1 concertpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

Grimes performs at the BBC's Maida Vale studios

Avant-garde pop artist Grimes topped a lot of last year's critics' polls with her fourth album, Art Angels. Genre-bending and constantly confounding, it seemed to point a way forward for pop music, combining its more experimental moments with indelible melodies.

The Canadian musician popped into the BBC's Maida Vale studios last night to perform a half-hour live set on Annie Mac's Radio 1 show.

In between songs, the star talked about the year-long making of her album. "I tried to be reasonable about it, and keep snacks in the studio," she said.

"I recorded everything, produced everything, played every instrument by myself... [But] it's an extended form of laziness.

"The reality is that my nerves are too bad to have other people record my vocals. It's born of a deep desire not to sing in front of other people."

  2. When Harry met Lukepublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

It's not often Prince Harry finds himself outranked by the people he meets. But he did yesterday when he came face-to-face with the saviour of the universe, Luke Skywalker.

The prince and his brother Prince William met actor Mark Hamill while taking a tour of Pinewood Studios, which are currently being used by the cast and crew of the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII film.

Hamill shared some photos of the visit this morning on Twitter, including one which shows him offering Prince Harry "useless tips on assaulting the Death Star".

Given that Luke's assault on the Empire's base ended with a rather large explosion, we wouldn't call those tips entirely useless. If he was worried, though, maybe he should have stuck to telling him how to shoot womp rats back on Tatooine.

  3. Later... with Paul Simonpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

    Mark Savage
    Music reporter

BBC Two's Later... with Jools Holland returned for its 48th series last night, with music legend Paul Simon as its star guest.

Accompanied by Boston jazz collective Lake Street Dive, he played a lithe and supple track called Wristband, the first single from his forthcoming album Stranger to Stranger.

Also on the line-up were Kano, The Coral and Laura Mvula - who'll be sharing her back-stage diary from the show later this week.

You can catch last night's edition of the programme on the BBC iPlayer, while the full, extended version broadcasts on BBC Two on Friday at 23:05 BST.

  4. Legend of Tarzan stars 'bonded over pasta'published at 12:04 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

"Me Tarzan. You Jane. Me cook spaghetti."

Okay, so there was probably more to it than that. But it was tickling all the same to learn on Tuesday that actor Alexander Skarsgard bonded with Margot Robbie, his co-star in upcoming release The Legend of Tarzan, by cooking her spaghetti bolognese.

The pair were in London to talk to journalists about the latest big-screen adventure to be drawn from the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, a jungle-set yarn that was almost entirely shot at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire.

"We created a miniature version of Africa in an industrial neighbourhood in Watford," Skarsgard revealed.

The 20 minutes we saw from David Yates's film contained plenty of vine-swinging mayhem, which included Tarzan jumping onto the roof of a moving train and having a bruising punch-up with a (computer-generated) gorilla.

According to Skarsgard though, the only injury he suffered during filming came courtesy of Robbie - sustained, peculiarly enough, while they were shooting a love scene.

Take a look at the trailer for the film, which arrives in UK cinemas on 8 July.

  5. Radio 1 to play more music from the UKpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

    Mark Savage
    Music reporter

    Nick Grimshaw

Is Radio 1 about to ditch Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber to bring you more music by James Bay? That's the implication in a Guardian headline, external this morning - but the truth is a little more subtle.

The BBC has published a review into the distinctiveness of its biggest stations, following government criticism they were encroaching on their commercial rivals.

It found that 90% of the songs played on Radio 1 and 2 were not played anywhere else, but suggested that they should strengthen their commitment to new and homegrown talent.

    Quote Message

We will ensure that Radio 1 and Radio 2 have a strong commitment to new and UK music so that a strong proportion of the new music in daytime on Radio 1 and Radio 2 should be from the UK.

But that doesn't mean international acts will vanish overnight. In fact, as the report points out, 55% of the music played on Radio 1 is already sourced from the UK - and that exceeds the quota set by the BBC Trust.

The BBC is likely to get a new regulator next year after charter renewal and they could revise those quotas. But it doesn't seem likely that Rihanna will be banned from the airwaves just yet.

Radio 1 to play more music from the UK

BBC Radio 1 is to strengthen its focus on homegrown talent, following a review of the station's distinctiveness.

  7. BBC Breakfast tasks William Shatnerpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

It's a lesson for us all - when you use someone's Twitter handle in a tweet, remember that they will read it and may take umbrage with how you've billed them.

That's exactly what happened to BBC Breakfast this morning, when they tweeted about Rufus Wainwright's new project, a collection of Shakespeare's sonnets featuring both Star Wars' Carrie Fisher and Star Trek's William Shatner.

Tongue firmly in his tweeting cheek, the original James T Kirk questioned whether he should be below Princess Leia.

But it was Walker's joking confusion of the two franchises that drew Shatner's best reaction, as he passed the buck to none other than Luke Skywalker himself, actor Mark Hamill.

All good-natured joshing - but we're guessing that if Shatner gets invited on to the Breakfast sofa anytime soon, he'll set phasers to stun.

  8. Lily Allen accuses police of victim shamingpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

Pop singer Lilly Allen has accused the police of "victim shaming" her over her recent stalking case in a emotional interview on BBC's Newsnight.

Alex Gray, 30, from Perth, was convicted of burglary and harassment at Harrow Crown Court earlier this month.

Allen said that after she spoke out, a Met officer suggested her "high profile" intervention may have discouraged others from coming forward.

The Met says it takes stalking "extremely seriously" and seeks to put victims at the heart of any inquiry.

The full interview is now available on iPlayer.

Little Mix's third album, Get Weird, is the biggest-seller of their career, with sales approaching half a million in the UK.

To celebrate, they're releasing the fan favourite Hair as the fourth single from the album. It's been given a fresh lick of paint and a new rap from Sean Paul. And somehow, in the middle of their sold out UK tour, they've managed to film a video.

Riffing on Grease and Risky Business, it sees the quartet shaking off a break-up via the medium of a girls' night in (and some of the most blatant product placement in living memory).

  10. Schofield to reprise Joseph role, without Technicolor dreamcoatpublished at 09:38 British Summer Time 20 April 2016

    Phillip SchofieldImage source, PA

If Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is to be believed, any dream will do - but it's probably safe to say that Phillip Schofield never had one that would see him reprising his lead role in that musical.

But that's about to change, as the presenter is to leave the comfort of the This Morning sofa and take to the stage once again for a brief revival of his turn in the Lord Lloyd-Webber and Sir Tim Rice show.

Schofield, who took over the lead in the show from Jason Donovan in 1993, is to perform two songs from the musical as part of a tour he will host celebrating the knights and dames of the entertainment industry.

He's revealed that he loved his coat of many colours so much back then that he "nicked" the one he wore at the London Palladium - along with Joseph's rather skimpy loincloth.

    Quote Message

I thought if I walk out of the building I will never know which one is mine, so I put it in the boot of the car and the wardrobe mistress went spare and said it had to come back. Because I was going on the road we reached a compromise and I used that coat for all the publicity and then I was allowed to keep it.

    Quote Message

It's been in the wardrobe, tucked right up at the end. It's not one of those things I put on even on my own or a costume party. I would be scared it would get a cigarette burn or wine spilt on it.

While he says the coat "still does up round the middle", it probably won't get a run out in the new shows.

    Quote Message

I am not even sure we will do a coat, I don't know where we are with that yet. It's more about the songs.

    Quote Message

When you've done something I can't remember how many times, it's in there somewhere. I can still remember all the colours in the right order so it's strange what goes in and stays.

The Knights of Music, external is in Cardiff, Ipswich, Northampton and Southampton between tomorrow and Sunday.

And in case you can't remember how Schofield sounded as Joseph, here he is at the 1993 Children's Royal Variety Show.
