There are some dead certs for nominations. There are some long shots.

Here are some who are in the middle, on the cusp:

    • Meryl Streep (for her Golden Globes speech, as well as her role in Florence Foster Jenkins, and would be a record 20th acting nomination)
    • Mel Gibson (for Hacksaw Ridge - has Hollywood forgiven him?)
    • Tom Hanks (for Sully, which would be his first Oscar nomination since 2001)
    • Kevin Costner (for Hidden Figures, which would be his first nomination since 1991)
    • Daniel Blake (will Oscar respond to Ken Loach's stirring Newcastle-set drama I, Daniel Blake?)
    • Lin Manuel-Miranda (the Hamilton creator could be nominated for best song - he already has an Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Pulitzer. Could he complete the set?)
    • Any women in the best director category (pigs might fly)

  4. Did you know...?published at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    DeadpoolImage source, Fox

    • The all time nominations record is 14, La La Land could get close to that
    • If Deadpool is nominated for best picture, it will be the first superhero film to get a nod in that category. (The Dark Knight not getting one generated a lot of anger, and led to the number of nominations being increased from five)
    • If OJ: Made in America gets a best picture nomination it will be the first documentary to achieve the feat
    • If (when!) Damien Chazelle gets a director nomination, IF he then goes on to WIN he will be the youngest ever best director winner

Manchester by the SeaImage source, Claire Folger
    • If (when!) Manchester by the Sea gets a best picture nod it would be the first nomination for a US release by a streaming service (Amazon), although it has been released in cinemas before it begins streaming on Amazon from early next month
    • And if Michelle Williams is nominated for the same film, she will have managed it with only around 11 minutes screen time. Judi Dench won with an around eight-minute performance as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love in 1989. The record is Beatrice Straight who won with only six minutes of screen time for 1976’s Network
    • If both Rogue One and Doctor Strange get best special visual effects nominations, it will pit British SFX whiz Neil Corbould (Rogue One) against his brother Paul (Doctor Strange)
    • If Kevin O'Connell gets a nomination for best sound mixing for Hacksaw Ridge it will be his 21st nod. He currently holds the unenviable record of 20 nominations and no wins!

  6. Pharrell, Sia and Justin Timberlake could score nominationspublished at 12:33 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    Mark Savage

The big question in the best original song category is not whether La La Land will receive a nomination... it's whether it'll get two.

The recurring theme song, City of Stars, is a dead cert - but Emma Stone's solo number, Audition could also be in with a shot (many musicians, particularly those with a musical theatre background, think it's the better song.)

To make the cut, he'll have to beat another animation - Disney's Moana - whose songs were written by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The frontrunner from that film is the title character's theme song, How Far I'll Go. If Miranda wins, he'll become one of only 13 people to be an EGOT recipient - winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
