Backstage here in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, there is a shocked reaction after Will Smith seemingly hit Chris Rock live on stage.

At first, it seemed like a joke or some kind of set-up.

Chris Rock was presenting a category and made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will's wife.

"Jada, I love you, G.I. Jane 2, I can't wait to see it."

By the look on her face, she did not appreciate the joke about her appearance.

Will Smith seemed to laugh at first, but he then rapidly got up out of his seat and whacked Rock on the face, or so it looked like.

At this point, everyone still thought it was some kind of joke, but now doubt was starting to creep in.

"Wow, Will Smith just slapped the [hell] out of me," Rock said.

Smith, now sitting back in his seat and visibly angry, then shouted: "Keep my wife's name out your [expletive] mouth."

Still recovering from the punch and looking a bit bewildered, Rock started to defend himself. "Wow dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke."

Smith then shouted a second time. "Keep my wife's name out your [expletive] mouth."

"I'm going to," Rock replied, now looking genuinely shaken.

Viewers at home didn't hear the latter parts of this exchange, as broadcast network ABC cut the sound. Here in the press room though, we heard the full thing on an unedited live feed.

It was clear by the end that this was not a joke. Smith would know better than to drop the F-word on live TV, and Chris Rock was clearly stunned.

Attempting to make light of the situation and realising he'd just made Oscars history, Rock then said: "That was the greatest night in the history of television."

Some background: This is not the first time that Rock has poked fun at Jada Pinkett Smith.

When he hosted the ceremony in 2016, he said Jada boycotting the ceremony over Oscars So White was pointless, because she wasn't invited to the Academy Awards anyway.

  4. WINNER: Best documentary, Summer of Soulpublished at 03:41 British Summer Time 28 March 2022

Questlove has just given an emotional speech after his documentary about the largely-lost-to-history 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival won.

"This is about marginalised people in Harlem that needed to heal from pain," the director said, as he stood on stage with Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent and David Dinerstein

"It's such a stunning moment for me right now... just know that in 2022 this is not just the 1969 story about marginalised people in Harlem, this is the story of... I'm sorry I'm just overwhelmed right now."

He got a huge round of applause.

It's worth noting that Coda has so far won both of the two awards it was nominated for.

The only one it has left is best picture. If Coda scoops that, it will be the first time a film has won the top prize with fewer than four overall nominations since Grand Hotel in 1932.

We aren't quite there yet, but it certainly seems to have the momentum.

Its biggest challenger for best picture, The Power of the Dog, has not yet won anything.

But it has a good chance to score best director for Jane Campion and a reasonably good chance for best picture.

  7. Sir Kenneth's 'lovely gesture' in acceptance speechpublished at 03:28 British Summer Time 28 March 2022

What a tribute to his birth city, the island of Ireland and all those who suffered during the Troubles.

This win clearly meant a lot to Sir Kenneth, his first ever Oscar.

He mentioned Jamie Dornan’s father Jim in his acceptance speech. Professor Dornan passed away before he could see his son star in Belfast. What a lovely gesture from Sir Kenneth.

  8. WINNER: Best score - Dune, Hans Zimmerpublished at 03:26 British Summer Time 28 March 2022

    Another win for Dune.

The German composer fended off competiion from the likes of Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, who wrote the score for The Power of the Dog, to win this one.

A short while ago we were witness to the first live performance of the mega hit We Don't Talk About Bruno, from the animated film Encanto.

So let's talk about it, shall we?

It was a colourful and energetic performance from the cast of the film, who were joined by Becky G, Luis Fonsi and Megan Thee Stallion - with the latter adding a special new rap verse for the occasion.

The music stars were given quite a lot of prominence on what was such a big night for Encanto's stars though...

Sir Kenneth BranaghImage source, Getty Images

Sir Kenneth, who has just recovered from Covid, won Belfast's first Oscar of the night.

He told the audience it was "an amazing tribute to a fantastic city".

The autobiographical film, about a young boy's childhood in Belfast at the start of the Troubles in the 60s, was about "the search for joy and hope in the face of violence", he added.

"We lost some people along the way, we miss them, we love them and will never forget them, in the heartbreaking, heartwarming human story of the amazing city of Belfast in the fabulous island if Ireland".

  13. WINNER: Best costume design - Jenny Beavanpublished at 02:56 British Summer Time 28 March 2022

    Jenny BeavanImage source, Getty Images

Jenny Beavan just won for Cruella - which had some truly stunning costumes.

The last time she collected an Oscar - for Mad Max: Fury Road in 2016 - her outfit of a leather biker jacket and trousers got a mixed response, external.

This time, she said her clothes "were honouring my inner Cruella".

She said the only reason she felt she had time to do this film was because of the "most phenomenal creative, clever, generous, amazing people - without whom it woudn't have happened".

She added that one of the film's stars "Emma Thompson hyperventilating over some of her fittings" was "one of the highlights of my career".

Here's a win for the Brits.

The Riz Ahmed-starring film, about an immigrant family in Britain preparing for a wedding celebration until a right-wing march causes chaos, has just won the award for best live action short film.

Accepting the award, Ahmed said: "In such divided times the role of stories is to remind us there is no us and them, there's just us."

    Greig FraserImage source, Getty Images

Dune cinematographer Greig Fraser has just given us some hints about what to expect from the much-anticipated Dune sequel.

"I can't give you any scoops, I've been trained to not give you any scoops," he says, to a murmur of disappointment.

"But," he continues, "I can tell you this is a bigger story, I read the script and I'm more blown away by this script than I was by part one."

    Blimey.

"In fact, I was sitting in a meeting with [director] Denis Villeneuve's house the other day talking about [the sequel], and I said to Denis, 'I can't believe these people pay us to do this, to make these movies which are so exciting and amazing.'"

He also joined the chorus of tech nominees who are disappointed that the "below-the-line" categories were presented during a pre-show this year with only edited highlights shown in the broadcast ceremony.

However, he noted: "The 45 minutes we did that [the pre-show] was so much fun. And you know why, because it was so informal.

"But films are made by the editors, visual effects supervisors, production designers, and it seems odd to have some random relegation. Everybody in this crowd realises and understands why this happens. We're not silly and we understand the economics.

"We want to encourage kids who are watching these awards to go, 'you know what, I'm not an actor or a director, but I want to be a make-up artist. I want that celebrity to apply to me in a job that I can go for.

"I get it [the decision to pre-record], but I just want my collaborators to be equally rewarded for the job they do."

  16. Why Troy Kotsur's hat helps him in the spotlightpublished at 02:44 British Summer Time 28 March 2022

    Troy KotsurImage source, Getty Images

Troy Kotsur is always seen at award ceremonies in his trademark peaked hat, and very stylish it is too.

He said at a recent awards show it helped shield his eyes from the bright and flashing lights from cameras, which can make it difficult for him to see his interpreter as he travels down the press line.

    Ryusuke HamaguchiImage source, Getty Images

The existential (and long) Japanese road movie has just won, as expected.

A few weeks back director Ryusuke Hamaguchi told our reporter Emma Saunders that Oscar praise was beyond his imagination.

It tackles the tricky themes of relationships and grief, and has had plenty of praise from global film critics. Just make sure you have three hours to spare to watch it if you haven't seen it yet.

This one has gone to Troy Kotsur for his role as the deaf father of a hearing daughter in the in the heart-warming Coda.

It makes him only the second deaf actor to win one, the first being his co-star Marlee Matlin, who won best actress for her debut film performance in Children of a Lesser God (1986).

He conducted his acceptance speech using American Sign Language (ASL).

Kotsur signed: "I just wanted to say that this is dedicated to the deaf community, the Coda [child of deaf adults] community and the disabled community.

    "This is our moment."

Notably, award presenter Yuh Jung Youn kept hold of the Oscar trophy rather than handing it to him so his hands were free to sign his speech. Nice touch from the Minari star.

  19. WINNER: Animated short film - The Windshield Wiperpublished at 02:18 British Summer Time 28 March 2022

This film explores, through short vignettes, the simple yet complex question "what is love?". It's by filmmaker Alberto Mielgo, whose credits include director, screenwriter, editor, sound design and music.
