All That Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen, follows two brothers who run a bird hospital dedicated to rescuing injured black kites in India's capital New Delhi.

Our India correspondent Soutik Biswas described the film as "a meditative tribute to the brothers, a rumination on climate change, and an unsparing look at life in Delhi's dystopian underbelly".

The film won best documentary at the Sundance and Cannes Film festivals in 2022.

Two sequels - Tom Cruise's action-packed Top Gun: Maverick and James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water - have both prompted huge numbers of people to head to the cinemas, as people immerse themselves in the big-screen experience.

Maverick has grossed $770m (£624m) at the international box office - but it wasn't a match for the second Avatar film, which has made a whopping $1.9bn (£1.5bn).

Meanwhile The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, made $401.6m (£325.6m). But will Oscars voters rate these films as highly as some of the other films being talked about this year, which are not in the same league financially?

Last year's nominations favoured sci-fi epic Dune, followed by Jane Campion's arthouse film The Power of the Dog. On the night, the latter won best director, while Coda won best picture.

Not too long to wait to find out who's on the shortlist this year...

  12. RRR song Naatu Naatu may be up for best original songpublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

Naatu Naatu from the Telugu blockbuster RRR is a song composed by MM Keeravani.

The four-and-a-half-minute musical number, features actors Ram Charan and Jr NTR, and has been a viral hit on social media in India and globally.

Fans worldwide have tried to replicate the synchronised choreography that accompanies its chorus.

Keeravani's composition won best original song at the recent Golden Globes.

  13. Cate Blanchett predicted to be nominated for Tárpublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

Last week, Cate Blanchett was shortlisted for the Leading Actress category in the Baftas for her performance in Tár - in which she plays a renowned orchestra conductor whose career starts to unravel when she is accused of abuse.

The actress has previously been nominated for seven Bafta Film Awards, winning three times for Blue Jasmine, The Aviator and Elizabeth.

  14. Sequels could break recordpublished at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Steven McIntosh
    Entertainment Reporter

The 2023 shortlist could see the largest number of sequels ever nominated for best picture in a single year.

The contenders include Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and possibly even Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

That's a lot of colons. Only two of those would have to be nominated to break the record for most sequels in a single year. However, that's partly because the best picture category is bigger than it used to be - with 10 slots available.

Just eight sequels have been nominated for best picture before, and no two in a single year. Those which have previously made the cut include follow-ups to the Godfather and Lord of the Rings, as well as Toy Story 3 and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Brendan Fraser is a hot favourite to be nominated for best actor for his performance in The Whale, which sees him play an obese professor trying to repair his relationship with his daughter.

The actor was huge in the late 1990s and early 2000s for films such as The Mummy and George of the Jungle, but he has been absent from the spotlight in recent years.

He is firmly on the comeback trail now, however, and last week he was in the UK to promote the film, appearing on programmes such as The Graham Norton Show and Radio 4’s Today, among others.

And while he was in London, he made a surprise appearance at the Prince Charles Cinema, which was hosting a special double-bill screening of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns.

"I am proud to stand before you tonight,” Fraser told the audience.“This is a film that was made in Britain...even the second one, too. Be proud. Thank you for being here."

If the rapturous response from the audience was anything to go by, there will be a lot of goodwill towards Fraser if he gets an Oscar nomination.

  16. Pop stars likely to feature in song categorypublished at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Entertainment Reporter

    Lady GagaImage source, Getty Images
    Image caption,

Lady Gaga previously won best original song for Shallow, from A Star Is Born

The best original song category is often starrier than the acting categories, thanks to the large number of pop stars who still record tracks for movie soundtracks.

The most likely nominee here is Rihanna, for Wake Me Up from Wakanda Forever. Lady Gaga may also be nominated for Hold My Hand, which plays over the credits of Top Gun: Maverick.

A nomination for Taylor Swift's terrific Carolina is uncertain but it could be a good way for the Academy to recognise Where The Crawdads Sing - which was successful at the box office but is not predicted to show up in other categories.

But the category won't be as starry as it might have been - because the song Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell contributed to the Turning Red soundtrack was not even longlisted.

  17. Riseborough could spring surprise nomination with little-known filmpublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

A little-known film which reportedly only made $27,000 (£21,800) at the box office has made a very late break for it in the best actress race.

British star Andrea Riseborough could spring a surprise nod after several Hollywood A-listers, including Courteney Cox, Susan Sarandon, Charlize Theron, and Gwyneth Paltrow got behind the film, To Leslie, and championed her performance.

Many tweeted their love for the movie, while others hosted their own screenings or gave the film a shout-out at other ceremonies, all in an effort to try and get the movie on the Academy's radar.

Riseborough is brilliant in the film, which follows an alcoholic mother who wins the lottery but squanders the money. However her awards momentum has only materialised in the last fortnight.

  18. RRR could make history for Indian filmspublished at 12:34 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Meryl Sebastian
    BBC News, Delhi

A nomination for RRR in one of the main film categories would be a historic first. The action epic, directed by SS Rajamouli, has been a huge box-office success in India and abroad.

The film was not picked by India as its official entry to the Oscars but submitted itself for consideration in 14 categories, including best film, best director and best original song.

RRR, which stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt, is one of India's most expensive films and comes from Tollywood - the country’s Telugu film industry.

Its a historical fantasy that tells the fictional story of two revolutionaries who fight against British rule in India and stars Telugu film superstars Ram Charan and Jr NTR in lead roles.

RRR was awarded the Golden Globe for best original song and bagged two wins at the Critics Choice Awards, including best foreign language film.

Wakanda Forever's Angela Bassett has already won best supporting actress at the Golden Globes

A best supporting actress nomination for Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett would mark the first ever acting nod for a Marvel film.

The film sees Bassett reprise her role as Queen Ramonda, the mother of the late Chadwick Boseman's character T'Challa.

The first Black Panther movie was nominated for best picture in 2019, and actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been shortlisted for their performances in other films - but not for those in the superhero franchise.

In total, Marvel films have previously scored 19 nominations - but many of these were in technical categories. For example, the original Black Panther won best costume design, production design and original score.

  20. Category controversy for Michelle Williamspublished at 12:26 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2023

    Steven McIntosh
    Entertainment Reporter

    Michelle Williams

There has been much debate in awards circles this year over Michelle Williams' potential nomination for Steven Spielberg's autobiographical The Fabelmans.

She plays the protagonist's mother in the drama, but despite not being the main character, Williams decided to submit herself in the leading actress category rather than supporting, with the support of the film studio.

This led to a debate in Hollywood, external about whether mothering roles are traditionally overlooked for leading categories, despite such characters often having a large amount of screen time.

However, Oscar rules state the Academy can nominate any actor in whichever category they see fit. So if enough members decide Williams' character was a supporting role, she could show up there anyway despite her own efforts to upgrade.
