  1. After all that drama... that's a wrap!

Trond Fausa Aurvag, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Jason Clarke, and Director Christopher Nolan

Ahead of the nominations it was all about Barbenheimer - and the hype has borne out, to a point.

Oppenheimer leads the way with a whopping 13 nominations - including nods in all the big categories.

But Barbie's very respectable eight nominations have been slightly overshadowed by lead actress Margot Robbie missing out for her acting role and Greta Gerwig being ignored in the Best Director category.

However, Poor Things (11 nominations), Killers of the Flower Moon (10) and Maestro (7) could all still have a big moment.

    • You can read the full rundown here.

For now that is all from us - we'll be back to bring you live coverage of the ceremony itself on 10 March - bring your popcorn and join us on the big night.

  2. Could history be made at this year's Oscars?

Image caption: Jodie Foster was last nominated at the Oscars in 1992

The 2024 Oscars are weeks away - but some notable moments have already happened.

Today's nominations marked a return for Jodie Foster, following a 29-year absence. Foster was last nominated for an Academy Award in 1995 for her performance in the movie, Nell.

Martin Scorsese has the most Best Director nominations of any director alive, securing his 10th nod for Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite his nominations haul, Scorsese has only won the award once, for 2007's The Departed.

Speaking of nomination history - 91-year-old composer John Williams has just nabbed his 54th nomination for Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He is, unsurprisingly, the most-nominated musician in Oscar history. He's said the film will be his last major work.

  3. What about the Brits?

    Emily Blunt

Actresses Emily Blunt and Carey Mulligan are among the British stars represented in the Oscar nominations.

Mulligan is up for best actress for Maestro - while Blunt is in the supporting category for Oppenheimer.

Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Glazer are nominated for Best Director for Oppenheimer and The Zone of Interest respectively.

But no Brits have made it into the Best Actor category.

Elsewhere, Neil Corbould is up for visual effects in three of the five nominated films in that category - Napoleon, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, and The Creator.

  4. Where can I watch the Oscars ceremony?

If the nominations have whetted your appetite for the real thing then you can watch the Oscar ceremony itself on 10 March.

It will be broadcast on ITV in the UK and will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

  5. Ferrera's Barbie moment clearly resonated with Academy voters

Actor America Ferrera attends the 14th Governors Awards in Los Angeles, California, U.S., January 9, 2024
Image caption: America Ferrera scored a best supporting actress nomination for Barbie

One of the biggest surprises in the acting categories was America Ferrera being nominated for her supporting performance in Barbie.

She was seen as an outside bet but her monologue in the film about what it means to be a woman clearly connected with Academy voters.

In the leading actress category, there was recognition for Nyad star Annette Bening - whose nomination was also far from certain.

Elsewhere, Justine Triet's nomination for best director means there is still a woman in the category, despite Greta Gerwig's absence.

May December struggled - receiving just one nomination for original screenplay but missing out on acting nominations for its stars Julianne Moore, Charles Melton and Natalie Portman.

And there were no nominations whatsoever for All of Us Strangers or Saltburn, despite their strong performance at the Bafta nominations last week.

But given the success of Barbie overall, it's Gerwig's absence from best director and Margot Robbie missing best actress that will be seen as the biggest snub.

  6. Analysis

Gerwig and Robbie's Barbie snubs will be disappointing for many

    Emma Saunders

    Senior culture reporter

Many of today’s nominees were no surprise but many will be disappointed that Greta Gerwig missed out on a best director nomination.

The film’s star, Margot Robbie, also didn’t make the cut for best actress, while Ryan Gosling, who played Ken, was recognised in the best supporting actor category.

Not quite the feminist message that would have chimed with the film - although there was an acting nod for America Ferrera as well.

The film did land eight nominations over all, including best picture and best costume.

  7. Oppenheimer leads nominations with 13

As we've just said - it is Christopher Nolan's atomic epic Oppenheimer which leads the nominations with 13, just shy of the record of 14.

Poor Things comes in next with 11, including a fourth nomination for Emma Stone.

Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon is next on 10 before we get to Barbie on eight.

  8. Phew! Flurry of nominations reveals some suprises

    Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig

Well, those came in a flurry.

One of the biggest surprises is the apparent snub for Barbie with both lead actress Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig missing out on nominations in their categories.

However, the film still scored eight nominations with Ryan Gosling getting a nod for Best Supporting Actor and America Ferrera as Best Supporting Actress.

And of course - what a day for Oppenheimer! Its 13 nominations across all the main categories set the stage for huge success at the ceremony in March.

  14. Original screenplay nominations

They have rattled through quite a few categories already and we'll bring you the biggest of those.

Here are the screenplay categories, which can give a hint as to what might do well in Best Picture.

    Best Original Screenplay:

    • Anatomy of a Fall — Justin Triet, Arthur Harari
    • The Holdovers — David Hemingson
    • Maestro — Bradley Cooper, Josh Singer
    • May December — Samy Burch, Alex Mechanik

    • Poor Things - Tony McNamara
    • The Zone of Interest - Jonathan Glazer
  15. Jodie Foster among best supporting actress nods

More nods for Barbie & Oppenheimer and a surprise nomination for Jodie Foster who gets her first in 29 years.

    • Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer
    • Danielle Brooks - The Color Purple
    • America Ferrera - Barbie
    • Jodie Foster - Nyad
    • Da’Vine Joy Randolph - The Holdovers
  16. Best supporting actor up first

The first acting awards nominations announced are for Best Actor in a Supporting Role -and there are some big names in there.

    • Sterling K Brown - American Fiction
    • Robert De Niro - Killers of the Flower Moon
    • Robert Downey Jr. - Oppenheimer
    • Ryan Gosling - Barbie
    • Mark Ruffalo - Poor Things
  17. Here we go...

There is warm applause from the audience in Los Angeles and the announcement is beginning.

Our hosts Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid have taken to the stage.

  18. Why is best original song so crowded?

    Steven McIntosh

    Entertainment reporter

    Billie Eilish
Image caption: Billie Eilish is among a host of pop stars who could get a nomination

In a word, Barbie. The film's soundtrack was almost as ubiquitous last summer as the movie itself.

Three different songs from the film are in contention for the musical prize this year - Billie Eilish's What Was I Made For?, Dua Lipa's Dance the Night and I'm Just Ken performed by actor Ryan Gosling.

However, according to Oscar rules, only two songs from the same film can be nominated - so at least one of the above will miss out.

The remaining slots could be taken by the likes of Lenny Kravitz's Road to Freedom from Rustin and It Never Went Away from American Symphony, written by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson of US rock group Semisonic.

But don't bet against competition from songs lifted from the soundtracks of The Color Purple, Flora and Son, Flamin' Hot and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - the latter could see Olivia Rodrigo nominated for Can't Catch Me Now.

  19. We're now just a few minutes away...

We are now just moments away from the beginning of this year's Oscars nominations.

You can watch the announcement by simply hitting the Play icon at the top of this page.

The nominations for all categories will be read out by actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid.

  20. Da’Vine Joy Randolph leads supporting categories

    Da'Vine Joy Randolph
Image caption: Da'Vine Joy Randolph looks certain to get her first nomination

The Holdovers star Da'Vine Joy Randolph is the safest bet of all the acting categories - she has dominated at all the precursor ceremonies and is very likely to win best supporting actress at the Oscars.

She could be joined in the category by The Color Purple star Danielle Brooks, Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt, Nyad's Jodie Foster and Ferrari's Penélope Cruz.

Other possible nominees include Julianne Moore of May December, Saltburn's Rosamund Pike and Barbie's America Ferrera.

The supporting actor race will almost certainly be led by Oppenheimer's Robert Downey Jr.

But there is competition from Barbie's Ryan Gosling, American Fiction's Sterling K Brown and May December's Charles Melton.

Meanwhile, two actors from Poor Things - Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe - could be recognised, and it's never a good idea to bet against Robert De Niro, who appeared in Killers of the Flower Moon.
