  2. Cabinet are 'bully boys' says Caroline Lucaspublished at 13:02

Caroline Lucas, the Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion, joined the picket line at St Thomas' in London and said the government must "stop trying to impose a contract that is both unfair for doctors and, crucially, potentially unsafe for patients".

She added: "The junior doctors have reluctantly taken this action because the government simply isn't listening.

"Their message to Jeremy Hunt is that he must get back around the table and stop trying to impose a contract that is both unfair for doctors and, crucially, potentially unsafe for patients.

"Now junior doctors are making a stand against the bully boys in the Cabinet."

    Carole Walker
    Political correspondent

The prime minister's spokeswoman says there was very clear support at this morning's meeting of the Cabinet for the government's approach to the strike by junior doctors.

She said the government wants a fair deal for doctors whilst delivering on its commitment to establish a quality 24-hour, seven-day-a-week NHS. The safety and the care of patients are the government's top priority, it is monitoring the situation around the country and there was contingency planning in advance of today's action, she said.

She also said the government had made good progress during negotiations with the BMA and had met 15 out its 16 requirements.

She said: "We want to get back round the table and have talks with the BMA about this".

The message to doctors: "We are urging you to come back to the table and work with us," she said.

  12. Junior doctors strike a 'tragedy'- McDonnellpublished at 12:07

    Shadow chancellor John McDonnell
    Quote Message

All these junior doctors have been asking for is to get Jeremy Hunt back round the table at ACAS and resolve this. In Scotland and Wales they have been able to introduce the seven-day working without industrial action, and I can't understand why this is not happening in England. I think it is a tragedy that this has had to happen, but some of the patients have actually come out on the picket line today to support the junior doctors, as have large numbers of members of the public."

  14. Dispute will damage NHS, says Norman Lambpublished at 11:56

    Norman Lamb

Norman Lamb, Lib Dem health spokesman, says the "heat" needs to be taken out of the situation.

"This dispute will damage the NHS and will ultimately damage patient care. The main impact will be cancelled operations, cancelled consultations, but that just heaps more pressure on a system that's already under, I think, exceptional strain. In a way this is the latest manifestation of the pressure that the whole system is under."
