    The Met Office has issued its highest possible - severe -weather warning for Cumbria, as Storm Desmond continues to hit the UK with gales and heavy rain.

    The red warning urges the public to "take precautionary action and remain extra vigilant", as the region could see a further 150mm rainfall over the next 18 hours.

    Across northern England and southern Scotland, there are a number of amber and yellow severe weather warnings in force for the wet and stormy conditions, with gusts of wind between 70-80mph possible over the coming hours.

  5. Firefighters help people out of buildingpublished at 14:06

    Adrian Dargue, from Cumbria's Fire and Rescue Service, says five people had to be helped to get out of a building in Appleby, Cumbria, earlier.

    He told BBC News: "[We were] very careful to remove the people into the rescue boat without capsizing the boat. 

    "They were just lifted out from the windows... and taken to a place of safety within probably about half an hour."

    The latest update from the Environment Agency, external, which covers England and Wales, shows there are:

    - 17 severe flood warnings in place across northern England, which indicate there could  be "danger to life"

    - 70 flood warnings issued across the Midlands, northern England and Wales, which mean "immediate action is required"

    - And 72 flood alerts are also in place in Wales, the Midlands and northern England, which indicate "flooding is possible"

    BBC weatherman Chris Fawkes says that Cumbria is the "epicentre" for the flooding in northern England. 

    The county has 15 severe flooding warnings.

    If you're heading out to any sporting fixtures today, do check before you travel.

    Three Scottish Premiership matches and Glasgow Warriors' Pro12 match with Leinster have been postponed because of the extreme conditions.

    Celtic's match with Hamilton Academical and Partick Thistle's meeting with Motherwell have been called off because of waterlogged pitches.

    And high winds in Edinburgh have caused Hearts' game against Inverness Caledonian Thistle to be postponed.

    Front doors were submerged in this street in Appleby, Cumbria, which was overwhelmed by rising waters.

  19. Homes in Hawick evacuated by policepublished at 12:45

    Homes have been evacuated in Hawick in the Scottish Borders.

    It came after serious flooding was forecast for the area. 

    Police Scotland led what they've called a "phased evacuation of properties" in the Mansfield part of the town in the early hours of this morning.

    The Teviotdale Leisure Centre has been opened as a rest centre and residents have been directed there.
