    The level of police activity outside Parliament is unprecedented, the BBC's Eleanor Garnier says.

    One woman has died and a number of others have been hurt - including some with "catastrophic" injuries - in the incident on Westminster Bridge, a junior doctor at St Thomas' Hospital has said.

    The London Eye tourist attraction, just across the Thames from Parliament, said it was on lockdown following the attack. 

    A spokesman said: "At present we are holding all of our guests within our attractions as per tried and tested security procedures."

    He told BBC News: "We can't go in or out. I was in the area where the incident happened. We heard gun shots. We dropped to the floor.

    A planned evacuation of Parliament has been halted after an announcement was made saying there was a suspicious package in a vehicle and the bomb squad had been called.

    Theresa May's official spokesman said: "The prime minister was brought back to Number 10 from Parliament. She is currently monitoring the situation." 

    The office of the Serjeant at Arms, who handles security in the House of Commons, said: "We are aware that there has been an incident that has taken place. At this early stage, we cannot comment further."

    •  A policeman has been stabbed and his attacker shot by officers at the House of Parliament
    • Police are treating it as a "terrorist incident"
    • The attacker is reported to have mowed down several pedestrians as he drove a grey Hyundai car across Westminster Bridge before crashing it into railings
    • He is then reported to have run through the gates of the Palace of Westminster and stabbed the officer
    •  Eyewitnesses said he was shot by police as he approached a second officer clutching his knife
    • House of Commons and Lords in lockdown - as is nearby St Thomas's hospital
    • Public urged to avoid the area and Westminster Underground station is closed
    • Prime Minister Theresa May was seen being ushered into a silver Jaguar in the grounds of the Palace of Westminster as what sounded like gunfire rang out at around 14:45 GMT
    • A Downing Street source confirmed the prime minster was "OK".
