    The king of Spain's state visit to the UK in June has been postponed for a month, Buckingham Palace has said.

    The Queen and King Felipe VI decided to delay the 6-8 June visit after the snap election was announced, the palace said, and it will now take place from 12-14 July.

    King Felipe VI was due to make a state visit to the UK in March 2016, but this was postponed because of a political crisis in his country.

    A total of 12 Labour MPs have have said they are standing down.

    It’s the lowest number of retiring Labour MPs since the October 1974 general election.

    Mr Corbyn reiterated his desire for free school meals during his speech and he criticised grammar schools.

    Mr Corbyn also said that fighting to secure "justice for pensioners" would be a key part of his election campaign.

    The Labour leader said his party would keep the so-called pensions triple-lock - which guarantees the state pension will go up by at least 2.5% every year.

    Mr Corbyn also repeated his election promise to take on the establishment.

    Mr Corbyn said that "within a few hours" of Theresa May announcing the snap election, 2,500 people joined the Labour party.

  16. Gerard Coyne suspension 'does not affect Unite leadership candidacy'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 21 April 2017

    BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith said Mr Coyne's supporters see his suspension as an attempt to "nobble" their candidate.

    They say his candidacy will not be affected by his suspension, although it could open up the prospect of a challenge if he wins.

    Unite is Britain's biggest trade union and the Labour Party's main financial backer.

    Len McCluskey has been a staunch supporter of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn but Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson, and other figures on the "moderate" wing of the party, have thrown their weight behind Mr Coyne.

    Counting of the leadership ballots is expected to finish later today.

  17. Unite's ballot count and suspension of McCluskey challengerpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 21 April 2017

    Counting is under way in the Unite leadership ballot.

    There are three candidates: the incumbent Len McCluskey and his challengers Gerard Coyne and Ian Allinson.

    Yesterday it was revealed that Mr Coyne, who is seen as the anti-Jeremy Corbyn candidate, was suspended as West Midlands regional secretary pending an investigation.

    Mr Coyne is understood to be facing disciplinary proceedings for bringing the union into disrepute.  

    He is not thought to have been suspended as a union member.
