"It doesn't work like that for ordinary people."

Next week, Parliament will have to finalise or bin the remaining legislation still passing through Westminster.

There are a few bills at ping-pong stage at the moment bouncing between the Lords and Commons in search of final agreement.

What normally happens in these circumstances is that the government seeks as much agreement as possible, and drops controversial parts of the legislation to get the rest through - a process known in Westminster slang as the "washup".

As Emma Norris of the Institute for Government points out, external, bills which are currently in ping-pong stage which the government wants to see passed "are only likely to make it through to the statute book with compromises".

Yesterday ministers were able to resist a Lords amendment to the Technical and Further Education Bill, external attempting to secure child benefits for apprentices on the grounds that it is a financial matter, giving MPs the final say.

"We will no longer allow those at the top to leach off of those who bust their guts on zero hours contracts or those forced to make sacrifices to pay their mortgage or their rent," he said.

"Instead of the country’s wealth being hidden in tax havens, we will put it in the hands of the people of Britain, as they are the ones who earned it.

"In this election Labour will lead the movement to make that change. We will build a new economy, worthy of the 21st century and we will build a country for the many not the few."

  9. Corbyn: Theresa May will make this election about Brexitpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 20 April 2017

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the prime minister "will insist that this is an election about Brexit".

"She will try to downplay the issues that affect people’s lives every day and instead turn the election into an ego trip about her own failing leadership and the machinations of the coming negotiations in Brussels," he said.

"It is only Labour that will focus on what kind of country we want to have after Brexit. In the coming weeks Labour will lay out our policies to unlock opportunities for every single person in this country."

  10. Jeremy Corbyn: Labour will make sure everyone pays their taxespublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 20 April 2017

    Jeremy Corbyn

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has accused the Conservatives of being "too morally bankrupt" to take on the "gilded elite that hide their money in the Cayman Islands".

Warming to his theme, he said: "Labour will end this racket and make sure everyone pays their taxes - we'll overturn the rigged system."

He accused the Tories of "seven years of broken promises" on pay, the deficit, NHS, schools and the environment.

He said it was "their wealthy friends in the City that crashed our economy" and not pensioners.

If he was Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley he would be worried about a Labour government and would want to see Conservatives in charge.

They are "monopolising wealth that should be shared by everyone in the whole country", he said.

He said the establishment "and their camp followers in the media think we don't play by their rules". He adds that on that point they are right.
