  3. Brexit secretary unsure if election can be postponedpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 4 June 2017

    David Davis

Brexit Secretary David Davis has said he is not sure postponing the general election “can be legally done.”

Speaking to the BBC, he said he thought doing so would need some “change of law” but because Parliament does not exist at the moment, he believed they were “locked into 9 June".

Mr Davis said he also believed the public would not want to postpone the vote:

"On the one hand we want to respect the people injured, and killed, and pay proper respect. But on the other hand, people are doing these things because they despise the freedoms we have, like the freedom to go out on a Saturday night - or cast a vote,” he said.

  4. Incident is 'under control' - Metpublished at 09:53 British Summer Time 4 June 2017

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick confirms the van used in the attack last night struck pedestrians on London Bridge before continuing into Borough Market. She said the three suspects then attacked pedestrians with knives before they were shot dead.

Ms Dick said officers "believe this incident is under control". She said it is a "fast-paced investigation" with "very significant resources deployed".

The priority was now to establish more details about the attackers, she added.

  14. Aim of the three attackers is abundantly clearpublished at 09:20 British Summer Time 4 June 2017

    Dominic Casciani
    Home Affairs Correspondent

Plans to use bombs, such as at Manchester Arena, are rarer because plotters need to have the technical skills for such an appalling attack.

But attacking people with cars and knives is far easier and had long been encouraged by the so-called Islamic State group and other jihadists.

The aim of the three attackers last night is abundantly clear - not only did they want to kill, but they almost wanted to lose their own lives.

They would've known full well that attacking people in the street would draw armed police in their direction and the fake bomb belts they were wearing would, in their own warped minds, hasten their demise.

  15. Terrorism begins to feel like the new normalpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 4 June 2017

    Dominic Casciani

    Armed policeImage source, PA

With three attacks in three months terrorism against soft targets is beginning to feel, to some people, like the new normal.

The brutal reality is that this kind of threat is absolutely typical of what jihadists sought to achieve in all their attacks across Europe.

Since 2013 security services in the UK have foiled 18 plots.

A large proportion of those have involved suspects who set out to commit acts of violence similar to the attack on Westminster Bridge and London Bridge.

  16. Green Party suspends national campaigningpublished at 09:16 British Summer Time 4 June 2017

The Green Party has suspended national campaigning until this evening.

Co-leader Caroline Lucas said her "heart goes out to all those affected and caught up in these horrific and despicable attacks, and my thoughts are with the victims and their families".

Her fellow joint leader Jonathan Bartley said he was "sickened that terrorists have again attempted to divide us in such a cruel and crude fashion."

  17. 'All of our thoughts are with those affected' - SNPpublished at 09:07 British Summer Time 4 June 2017

The SNP has released a statement condemning the attack:

    Quote Message

All of our thoughts are with those affected by the dreadful events in London... Respect for those who have lost their lives must be our priority. However, it is also important - especially so close to an election - that the terrorists do not succeed in their attempts to undermine our democracy.

  19. Eyewitness: 'The attacker stared at me realising he wasn't getting in'published at 09:01 British Summer Time 4 June 2017

Brendan was having dinner with his partner in the Wright Brothers restaurant in Borough Market. He told the BBC he came face to face with one of the attackers through the locked door of the restaurant.

    Quote Message

We were eating in the restaurant. All of a sudden there was a lot of commotion. Within seconds it was obvious that something big was happening.

    Quote Message

I grabbed my girlfriend and hid behind the bar in the restaurant. We could hear gunfire and explosions.

    Quote Message

With others we moved to the cellar, which had a door that could be locked from the inside.

    Quote Message

A lady started fitting in the cellar and her tongue was swelling up but no ambulances were allowed through. I went upstairs to see what was going on.

    Quote Message

There were people running out of the bar across the road. Then a guy ran across the road up to me with a massive knife. He stared at me realising he wasn't getting in. He ran off, or I ran back downstairs first, I can't remember.

    Quote Message

All of a sudden there were three policemen with guns saying we had to leave. They gave us a direction we had to run in and we had to go. You'd run 15m and then see the next policeman who would tell you where to go. People were running for their lives.

    Quote Message

They did an excellent job but were visibly worried.
