Forbury Gardens, the park at the centre of the attack on Saturday night, lies at the heart of Reading.

Cordoned off, with police on guard at the entrance, it is now the site of a huge fingertip search.

"Forbury Gardens will be known to everybody in Reading," Councillor Jason Brock told BBC News, calling it "a very special place for all of us".

"It is very beautiful, it's in the centre of town - people go there to socialise and relax.

"It's very much part of our community and it makes what happened last night all the more shocking and traumatic for us in Reading.

"I completely understand that people in Reading will be feeling very concerned and afraid," he said, adding that the council was working with police "hand in glove" to support them in their investigation.

There were two critical things in Neil Basu's statement:

    • That they don’t at this at stage think anyone else was involved. It looks like this was a lone individual who was radicalised and carried out this attack on his own.
