It's been particularly violent across Liverpool in recent days.

As we have been reporting, nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel was shot dead in a house in Dovecot and her mother and a 35-year-old man also suffered gunshot injuries.

Also last night, a woman in her 50s, was stabbed to death near a pub on Cherryfield Drive, in Kirkby.

It comes after the death of another woman, Ashley Dale, was fatally shot in the Old Swan area of the city.

The council worker was found wounded in her back garden in the early hours of Sunday and died a short time later in hospital.

Merseyside Police said she had not been the intended target, adding that her door had been forced open and several shots fired.

We've had some more information from Merseyside Police we can bring you.

They say there's nothing to indicate that Olivia's shooting is linked to other recent killings in Liverpool but officers will be keeping an open mind to follow any potential leads.

They say the attack on the 35-year-old man was targeted and is believed to be related to organised crime.

Police say they have not yet spoken to the man, who remains in hospital with injuries which are not thought to be life threatening.

    He is not under arrest.

Local MP Paula Barker says the death of the nine-year-old girl is “utterly devastating”.

This is completely unacceptable and this mindless violence simply has to stop,” she told the BBC earlier today.

“I know the people of Liverpool will be absolutely horrified.

“And it comes 15 years to the day after Rhys Jones was senselessly murdered on the streets of our city,” she added.

The Labour MP for Liverpool Wavertree urged anyone with any information to contact the police or crime stoppers.

Discussing the wider issue of violence in the city, Barker said she thought it needed to “start with education”, adding “we have to get into schools" and engage with young people to understand why people carry guns and knives.

We've been hearing from more people who live in the Kingsheath Avenue area where last night's shootings took place.

Marie Reilly says her partner heard four gunshots, which also sounded like fireworks, and then police started arriving.

She didn't realise what had happened until this morning and says the fact that the incident took place on her doorstep was scary.

Marie knew the man and woman who were injured in the incident well enough to speak to them, describing them as "lovely".

She has lived in the area for 36 years, but says the recent violence in the city is "getting too close" and it could be time to move elsewhere.

"I think it's time to move... It just makes me think it's time to go," she told the BBC.

Another neighbour also heard four gunshots and described the incident as "very sad".

Sarah Halliday said: "It's absolutely disgusting to wake up and find that a nine-year-old girl has been shot dead."

She has a five-year-old daughter herself and says she won't allow her to play outside in the area when she's older.

Sarah's partner, Scott Mason, also expressed his shock, saying he can't feel safe in his own back garden any more.

"It's scary for men because women and kids are getting shot," he said.

"You're scared of your girlfriend and your daughter going to the shop, are they going to come back?"
