In his tribute, SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said the relationship between Scotland and the Queen was one of "shared admiration".

"While she was everyone's Queen she was seen by many as Queen Elizabeth the Queen of Scots.

"Her mother was from Glamis in Angus."

Blackford adds that Scotland was a special place to the Queen in both her official and private capacity.

"Balmoral was the Queen's favourite home," he says.

"She was able to enjoy the peace and the great outdoors with her dogs and horses.

"It is clear Balmoral was a place of peace and sanctuary for her life.

"It is therefore fitting she met her final peace in Balmoral.

"She will now have enduring peace and will be reunited with Prince Phillip."

He finishes by saying "God bless the King".

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer adds that "the loss of our Queen robs our country of its stillest point, its greatest comfort, at precisely a time when we need those things most.

"Our Queen's commitment to us, her life of public service, was underpinned by one crucial understanding, that the country she came to symbolise is bigger than any one individual or any one institution.

"It is the sum total of all our history and all of endeavours and it will endure.

"The late Queen would have wanted us to redouble our efforts, to turn our collar up and face the storm, to carry on. Most of all she would want us to remember that it is in these moments that we must pull together.

"The reason our loss feels so profound is not because she stood at the head of our country for 70 years but because, in spirit, she stood amongst us."

He ends by saying: "God save the King."

"Yet it's one we all share because Queen Elizabeth created a special personal relationship with us all.

"That relationship was built on the attributes that defined her reign, her total commitment to service and duty, her deep devotion to the country, the Commonwealth and the people she loved.

"In return for that, we loved her."

Sir Keir thanked the Queen for her messages of comfort during the pandemic, and reads a Philip Larkin poem written for her Silver Jubilee.

"After her accession in February 1952 she first came to the Palace of Westminster to open the session of Parliament in November 1952, when Winston Churchill was the prime minister and Speaker William Morrison was in the chair, almost 70 years ago."

He says during the Queen's reign, she saw 10 different Speakers occupy the chair and 18 general elections had been held.

"As the longest-serving monarch this country has known she would have been assured of a notable entry in our history books even if it were not for the magnificence in which she undertook the role as Queen.

"She was the most devoted monarch. As well as Queen, she was a wife, a mother, a grandmother and great grandmother - roles she carried out with the same sense of occasion and human kindness as the role of Queen."

Former Prime Minister Theresa May says audiences with the "immensely knowledgeable" Queen were the only meetings as leader where everything that was said would remain private.

She says the meetings involved "talking about the affairs of the day, in a sense tapping into her wisdom and that knowledge that she had from her great experience".

The Queen would pass on "the knowledge that she had of the people, a lot of the people that the prime minister, that I, was dealing with," May tells BBC's Radio 4 Today programme.

"She was a very acute judge of people and was able often to give those little, if you like, pen portraits of people that she knew, that she'd met.

"And sometimes it was a case of not just the individual but actually a sort of history of that individual, of her experiences of particular countries, particular issues."

May adds: "There was often that twinkle in the eye, and that magnificent smile that would break out and that calmed so many people's nerves and made so many people feel at ease."
