  20. Elaborate ceremony will mark transition to reign of Charles IIIpublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

    Sean Coughlan
    BBC News, royal correspondent

Most of us get our news from mobile phones now, but the Accession Council is from a time when news was delivered by someone proclaiming the latest updates from a balcony.

This elaborate piece of pageantry and ceremony will mark the symbolic transition to the new reign of Charles III.

The great and the good will be gathered inside St James’s Palace to witness the rightful heir inheriting the throne and proclaim him as King - and in a second part of the ceremony the new King will make his own pledges.

And then the news will be shared to the rest of us, shouted from a balcony, making sure that everyone is clear about who is the new King.

The news is delivered by the “Garter King of Arms”, one of the ceremonial roles that will make this such a spectacle. It’s where the monarch moves into its mode of ornate language and ritual.

In previous councils there were trumpets played to make sure that everyone was paying attention when the news was delivered. And with this ceremony being televised for the first time, we’ll be able to see how this historic moment is choreographed.

We’ll also see the palace flags temporarily being flown again at full mast to mark the proclamation of the new King.
