The Duke of Sussex, who's here without his wife Meghan, looked happy and relaxed as he entered with his cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the daughters of Prince Andrew.

Prince Harry was dressed in a smart morning suit as he chatted away to Princess Beatrice.

From the media stand, we saw him pat Beatrice's husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on the back, with a smile on his face. He's known to be very close with Beatrice and her sister Eugenie.

  6. Former prime ministers arrivepublished at 10:40 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

Back at the abbey, before Prince Harry, we saw a flurry of former prime ministers.

First up, we had David Cameron and his wife Samantha. They arrived at the same time as Tony Blair, his wife Cherie and Gordon and Sarah Brown. Sir John Major is here too.

In the next group were more recent leaders: Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie, who’s in a navy blazer and hat, as well as Theresa May and Liz Truss, who's in bright orange.

None of them greet each other and file quickly into the abbey.

Whitehall is also home to the UK’s primary war memorial, the Cenotaph - used in annual remembrance events.

King Charles laid a wreath there in November, and had previously stood in for his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, on the rare occasions she was not able to attend.

The 111-year-old structure often features in grand ceremonial occasions - including some of the pageantry during the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics.

Tourists are often bemused by the inside wall of one of the arches, which has a small nose-like protrusion.

It’s traditionally thought to honour the Duke of Wellington - said to have had a large nose.

Nothing but the quiet hum of the bustling media pack stationed outside Canada Gate could be heard as stock-still royal footmen and soldiers on horses waited for the King and queen consort to leave Buckingham Palace. The rain showers plummeted down but still the guards were unmoved.

And then came the music. The rich sound of trumpets and booming drum rolls rang out as curious onlookers waited patiently, undeterred by the erratic weather.

The crowds up and down The Mall erupted into thunderous cheers at the first glimpse of the King and Queen Consort Camilla.

  16. Armed forces line the routepublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

This outbound procession involves around 200 members of the armed forces, centred around the Sovereign’s Escort of The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

Another 1,000 route liners from the forces are flanking them.

That might sound like a lot, but we’re expecting the return procession to be larger still.

The long, straight, tree-lined boulevard has witnessed countless royal processions over the centuries - memorably including last year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations which marked the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

You can bet this has all been rehearsed down to the most minute detail.

  18. Storied carriage with modern techpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

The royal couple are travelling at a stately pace in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which was commissioned for Queen Elizabeth II in 2012.

It’s a storied vehicle: the gilded crown on the top was carved from oak from HMS Victory.

As for the modern touches - the coach boasts hydraulic shock absorbers and air conditioning. We can’t speak for the handling on London roads, however.

It’s being drawn by six Windsor Grey horses: Icon, Shadow, Milford Haven, Echo, Knightsbridge and Tyrone.

It’s just gone 10:20 BST, and King Charles III is setting off from Buckingham Place through the Centre Gate.

The outbound journey to Westminster Abbey is known as the King’s Procession.

The return journey - featuring a much larger group - will be the Coronation Procession.

A carriage carrying the King and Queen Consort Camilla slots into a small waiting procession.

They’re given a Royal Salute from the King’s Guard as they set off.
