  1. New ceremonial roles for Camilla and Katepublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 17 June 2023

Queen Camilla and Catherine, Princess of Wales, have been given ceremonial military roles ahead of this year's Trooping the Colour.

Catherine is now the Colonel of the Irish Guards, the role was previously her husband's.

Camilla replaces the Duke of York as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

The role had been vacant since Prince Andrew was stripped of his military titles following the fallout over sexual assault allegations, claims he made no admission of liability for and has always denied.

William takes on the role previously held by his father of Colonel of the Welsh Guards.

Our correspondent Charlotte Gallagher, who's outside Buckingham Palace, says she has just seen King Charles arriving by car.

He was wearing his uniform, she says, and is likely to be saddling up ahead of his appearance on horseback - expected in about 20 minutes' time.

Aside from the guest of honour, King Charles, we'll see Prince William, Princess Anne and Prince Edward all on horseback today.

And Queen Camilla and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, will be in a carriage, with other members of the Royal Family also in the procession.

But we won’t see Prince Harry, who returned to his family in California after his recent court appearance in the hacking trial in London.

Prince Andrew also won’t be part of today’s events.

One of the highlights for those watching will be the huge flypast over Buckingham Palace - much bigger than the once we saw at the Coronation.

We can expect to see an array of helicopters, plus aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the C-130 Hercules on its final ceremonial flight, modern Typhoon fighter jets and the Red Arrows aerobatic team.

Air Vice-Marshal Mark Flewin, who is in charge of flypast, told the BBC this morning there will also be a“very special signature formation” that has so far been kept secret “as a surprise for his majesty the King”.

He says it’s fantastic weather and some of the planes - which will gather to the north-east of London before the event - are already getting airborne.

In short, it's a parade to mark the official birthday of the British Sovereign - it's been going for over 260 years.

It begins at Buckingham Palace and travels down The Mall towards Horse Guards Parade.

There's music and marching, and the King will carry out an inspection of the soldiers - moving slowly along the line as they stand in formation.

The royal party will then return up The Mall for an RAF flypast - they'll watch from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Crowds hoping for a good view of the parade are beginning to gather here.

A huge Royal Standard is flying over the palace and the balcony already has its red and gold dressing.

Later, it will be filled by the Royal Family who will watch what is going to be one of the biggest RAF flypasts for years.

The word from here so far is that the weather is looking good - welcome news after the cloudy weather curtailed much of the one planned for the Coronation.

Good morning, and welcome to our live coverage of what promises to be an impressive display of pageantry on a glorious sunny day in London.

It’s Charles III’s first Trooping the Colour - the ceremony takes place every year to mark the reigning monarch’s birthday. He’s been before, of course, but not as King.

We’re expecting to see him on horseback, alongside more than 1,400 soldiers and 200 horses.

And that’s not all. At 1pm, we’ll be treated to a massive flypast to make up for the one that was scaled back at the King’s coronation because of the terrible weather.

I’m here with my colleague Heather Sharp, and we have our royal correspondent Sean Coughlan positioned near Buckingham Palace.

Curtain up is at 10.30 BST - you can also watch live by pressing the play button above.
