The heartbreaking saga for the Hussain and Ijazzudin families is finally coming to an end.

It's difficult to put into words just how painful it has been for them since their sons' deaths back in February 2022.

Saqib Hussain's father Sajad and Mohammed Hashim Ijazzudin's father Sikander have spent every minute inside this courtroom in Leicester, making the journey every day from their Oxfordshire home to the East Midlands.

Mahek Bukhari, the ringleader, is now a shell of her former self which the press have observed from the courtroom dock.

She shared smiles and laughs with other defendants during quieter parts of the trial, and casually played board games when the jury retired.

She even waved and laughed at reporters outside with cameras from a balcony in the court foyer. It was just hours before she broke down in tears when she was convicted of double murder.

  3. Seven points to sum up today's proceedingspublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

If you're just joining us, here's what what went down in court today:

    • TikTok influencer Mahek Bukhari and her mother Ansreen Bukhari have been sentenced to 31 and 26 years respectively for the murders of 21-year-olds Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin.
    • Mahek had described her relationship with her mother as "elite" in a video posted to her 100k+ followers on TikTok
    • Ansreen and Hussain met through her daughter's influencer lifestyle - the judge described social media as "at the heart" of this case
    • After Hussain threatened to blackmail Ansreen to expose their affair, Mahek devised a plan to stop him
    • Enlisting the help of five others, the plan to force Hussain to give up the sexually explicit material of Ansreen ended in a fatal car crash
    • Two of the co-conspirators were charged with murder and have each been sentenced to 26 years and 36 years respectively
    • The remaining three were found guilty of manslaughter - two received 14 year sentences and one received an 11 year sentence
  4. Entirely selfish cold-blooded killing - CPSpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Reacting to the sentencing, the Crown Prosecution Service says the "cold-blooded" killing of Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin was "conceived and executed for entirely selfish motives".

"Rather than face up to the consequences of her affair, Ansreen Bukhari turned to her daughter and put together this conceited plan to silence Mr Hussain," senior crown prosecutor Arinder Ahmed says.

Ahmed says the mother and daughter "continuously used lies and deceit to try and evade responsibility for these killings", and all the defendants have "shown little or no remorse".

"One can only imagine how difficult the tragic loss of life for their families and loved ones must be to come to terms with. I hope the end to the court case can now help them with this process."

  5. The sentences in fullpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

    • Driver Raees Jamal, who we can now report is serving a rape sentence, was also jailed for life with a minimum of 36 years and 45 days
    • Mahek's mother Ansreen Bukhari - a life sentence with minimum term 26 years nine months
    • Rekan Karwan - jailed for life with at least 26 years and 10 months behind bars
    • Natasha Akhtar, who was cleared of murder, was jailed for 11 years and eight months for manslaughter
    • For a similar manslaughter conviction, Ameer Jamal was given 14 years and eight months
    • Sanaf Gulamustafa, also convicted of manslaughter, was jailed for 14 years and nine months
  6. TikTok influencer and her mother will spend decades behind barspublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

There you have it. Mahek Bukhari, a 24-year-old TikTok influencer, will spend 31 years and eight months in jail. Her mother, Ansreen Bukhari, 46, is sentenced to 26 years and nine months.

The pair and their accomplices have now all been sentenced over the murders of two men, after a "trap" set for the man Ansreen was having an affair with turned fatal, killing him and his friend.

The court heard victim Saqib Hussain had threatened to blackmail Ansreen with sexually explicit material he had collected during their affair when she tried to end things.

To aid her mother, Mahek set a trap for Hussain, in which he was to be met in a car park by a group masked in balaclavas. Prosecutors said the plan was to force him to hand over his phone containing the incriminating content.

The meeting ended in a fatal car accident after Hussain, who was accompanied by his friend Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, was chased at high speed by the gang enlisted by Mahek.

Hussain's parents addressed the court earlier this morning, saying they were "scarred for life" and "now live our own life sentence for losing our son". Ijazuddin's father spoke of his son's innocence, and that the family were "living in a nightmare" following his death.

  7. Police praised by judge for handling of casepublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

He says: "Those officers are a credit to themselves and to the force they serve."

    Proceedings have now ended.

The 332 days she has spent on remand will be deducted from that.

  13. Jamal sentenced to a minimum of 36 yearspublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Sentencing Raees Jamal, the judge says he has to factor in a current prison sentence Jamal is serving for rape.

The judge says "it would not be fair" for Jamal to come to the end of his rape sentence to then begin the life sentence. So, he will add on the remainder of Jamal's current sentence to the end of the life sentence being handing down now.

Including mitigating factors, such as that Jamal was the youngest involved that night, his murder sentence is a minimum of 31 years.

Adding on the remainder of his rape sentence, the total time Jamal will spend in prison is 36 years and 45 days minimum. The judge notes 30 days on remand will be deducted from that.

  17. 999 call 'one of the most moving and distressing pieces of evidence heard in court'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Moving on to Ameer Jamal and Sanaf Gulamustafa, Judge Timothy Spencer KC says eight people drove to Tesco to ambush but the initial plan "was rumbled".

"They quickly drove off," he says. "You could have disengaged. You could have given this venture up - but no. So began the pursuit coordinated by the open phone line between both cars.

"The two drivers Rekan Karwan and Raees Jamal attempted to block the driver in but it did not work."

The judge adds the pursuit was "fraught with danger" as he touches on a "hostile" phone call between Mahek Bukhari and Saqib Hussain.

"'Watch what I do to you.' - a direct threat to harm him in a three-minute phone call. That hostile phone call is followed by the 999 call.

"One of the most moving and distressing pieces of evidence heard in a criminal court."

  18. Judge tells defendants they were willing recruitspublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

The judge addressing Ameer Jamal and Sanaf Gulamustafa says they were were willing recruits in the ambush.

"You had with you face coverings, you were there to add numbers to the group and give support to the intimidation or the violence which was envisaged," he says.

He adds Natasha Akhtar's lies reveal she was an "integral part of this venture" and she was either "deluded" or finds lying second-nature.

  19. Not chance that Karwan took over driving Audi in fatal pursuit - judgepublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Speaking again to Rekan Karwan, Judge Timothy Spencer KC says he was the initial go-between for Mahek and the group in balaclavas.

He says it is not chance that he took over the driving of the Audi when the fatal pursuit took place.

The judge then says Raees Jamal took on the role of fixer.

He suggests Jamal was enthralled with Mahek Bukhari, despite being in a relationship "of sorts" with Natasha Akhtar, which explains why he was willing to "do her bidding".

  20. Mahek Bukhari 'immature' and 'self-obsessed'published at 16:11 British Summer Time 1 September 2023

Judge Timothy Spencer KC says he regards Mahek Bukhari as "immature below your years".

He says he has watched her over the course of the trial and says the "pressure of this case has caused you to behave inappropriately".

"Your fame through your career as an influencer has made you utterly self-obsessed with a wholly unjust sense of self-entitledness," he adds.

He says she seems to have no awarenes of the damage she does.

The judge adds that her solution to her mother's problems - to engage some of her male followers - "speaks volumes of your warped values".
