  5. The crimes Brand's teenage girlfriend allegespublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

Warning: This post contains details of sexual assault

Russell Brand was 30 when he began a relationship with a 16-year-old. The age difference in the relationship is legal in the UK, but he is accused of grooming and sexual assault, both of which are not.

His accuser, going by the name Alice, says Brand sent a car to her secondary school to take her out of lessons and to his home, and that he asked her to save his name in her phone as “Carly” to deceive her parents.

Encouraging secrets is a sign of grooming, which is a type of abuse. The Met Police website has a resource here, external if you'd like to know more about what grooming can look like.

Alice alleges that Brand once forced his penis down her throat, making her choke, and that after trying to push him off he only stopped after she hit him in the stomach.

She says she was visibly upset after the incident.

    Brand denies the allegations.

What does Scotland Yard's statement today mean?published at 17:47 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

    Dominic Casciani
    Home and Legal Correspondent

This afternoon's fresh statement from the Metropolitan Police does not name Russell Brand - only that its officers were aware of the allegations made by Channel 4 and the Sunday Times and, since then, it has received a report of a sexual assault in 2003.

That complaint is from a woman and predates the list of alleged incidents detailed by the media investigation.

Scotland Yard has not said - and this is important - that it has begun a criminal investigation. Nobody has been arrested either.

But its officers have now directly received an allegation of wrongdoing - and they need to try to get to the bottom of it.

So that starts with listening to the woman's story and assessing whether her account amounts to potentially actionable evidence.

Depending on the nature of her complaint and recollection, this could be a lengthy and sensitive exercise, involving specialist officers. Russell Brand has denied the allegations made over the weekend.

  9. Ticketholders for Brand's show offered refundspublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

Ticketholders for Russell Brand's postponed show at the Theatre Royal Windsor will be offered refunds, venue management has said.

A statement to the PA news agency said: "Theatre Royal Windsor will be offering ticket refunds in line with our terms and conditions of sale."

The theatres hosting the two remaining shows in Plymouth and Wolverhampton have not announced any such offer yet.

  10. Brand seems to miss regular online showpublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

Russell Brand usually does a live show on video platform Rumble every weekday at 17:00 BST - but he seemingly hasn't shown up this evening.

His most recent appearance on Friday night was to reject allegations against him that would be published the following day.

Brand did not allude to stepping away from the spotlight in that video, and advertisements for the regular show remain on his channel.

  11. 'Conclusions from mass confusion': What Brand's tour promisedpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

As the allegations broke on Saturday, Russell Brand performed at the Wembley Park Theatre.

But now, the promoters have confirmed, the rest of his shows for his Bipolarisation tour have been postponed. They were:

    • Windsor - 19 September
    • Plymouth - 22 September, and
    • Wolverhampton - 28 September

His tour had been described as: "Rules and rule breaking! Democracy and freedom! We reach conclusions from mass confusion by polling the live audience. We want to hear YOUR opinion.

"After amassing a movement of 25 million people across his digital channels, the Community festival and the live show Stay Free; the cultural and political commentator and award-winning British comedian is back on stage."

  12. Russell Brand upcoming live shows postponedpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 18 September 2023
    Breaking

Russell Brand's upcoming live shows have been postponed as police look into a claim of sexual assault from 2003.

A statement from the promoters of Brand's Bipolarisation tour said: "We are postponing these few remaining addiction charity fundraiser shows, we don't like doing it - but we know you'll understand."

  13. Brand has denied the allegations against himpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

A day before the publication of the allegations by the Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4 this weekend, Brand denied "serious criminal allegations" that were about to be made against him in a video on his social media accounts.

He said on Friday he was the subject of a "co-ordinated attack" involving "some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute".

"These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies, and as I've written about extensively in my books I was very, very promiscuous," he said.

"Now during that time of promiscuity the relationships I had were absolutely, always consensual."

  14. Met Police refers to 2003 allegation, a different year from those so far reportedpublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

The new Met Police statement appears to refer to a fresh allegation, not previously reported.

The allegations reported by Channel 4, the Times and the Sunday Times against Russell Brand were based on accounts from several women relating to incidents that were said to have taken place between 2006 and 2013.

The new police statement refers to an alleged sexual assault in 2003.

The Met statement does not identify the accused person, but says the report was made directly to them following the Sunday Times report and Channel 4 documentary about Russell Brand.

  15. Met Police confirms report of alleged sexual assault from 2003published at 15:51 British Summer Time 18 September 2023
    Breaking

We've just received an update from London's Metropolitan Police.

A spokesperson for the Met said: “We are aware of reporting by The Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches about allegations of sexual offences.

“On Sunday, 17 September, the Met received a report of a sexual assault which was alleged to have taken place in Soho in central London in 2003. Officers are in contact with the woman and will be providing her with support.

“We first spoke with The Sunday Times on Saturday, 16 September and have since made further approaches to The Sunday Times and Channel 4 to ensure that anyone who believes they have been the victim of a sexual offence is aware of how to report this to the police.

“We continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence, no matter how long ago it was, to contact us.”

  16. Alleged victims do not have faith in police, journalist sayspublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

Women choosing to report allegations of rape and sexual assault to journalists rather than the police is evidence of the lack of trust many people have in the authorities, a journalist working on the Brand story has told the BBC.

Rosamud Urwin, the Sunday Times media editor, says journalists have contacted the Metropolitan Police in London about the allegations about Brand.

Speaking to the BBC earlier, Urwin says there have been many reports in recent months of authorities failing victims who come forward, which makes people less likely to report alleged assaults to police.

"We've had a lot of stories about why women don't have faith in the criminal justice system to get justice, and within that the police."

She adds there are many reasons people don't want to report crimes and they "find coming to the media, as hard as it is, a preferable option".

  18. Two million watch Channel 4 documentary, executive sayspublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

Louisa Compton, the head of news at Channel 4, has shared the viewing figures for the documentary since it aired on Saturday evening.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, this afternoon, she said that the overnight audience averaged 1.8 million viewers across the 90 minute slot, peaking at two million viewers.

And 500,000 of those viewers were 16-34 watching the traditional form of television - not online or on an app.

The programme's Channel 4 overall linear average audience is currently at 2.4 million.

There are more than one million streaming views on C4's owned and operated platforms and almost 10 million social media views on all platforms, the viewing figures said.

  19. Three other women accuse Brand of sexual assaultpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

Warning: this post contains some graphic details about the alleged acts.

We've been hearing the account of Alice (not her real name), after she spoke to Woman's Hour this morning.

But three other women have accused Brand of sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013, in reports published over the weekend by the Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4:

    • One woman alleges that Brand raped her without a condom against a wall in his Los Angeles home. She says Brand tried to stop her leaving until she told him she was going to the bathroom. She was treated at a rape crisis centre on the same day, which the Times says it has confirmed via medical records
    • A second claims that Brand sexually assaulted her while she worked with him in Los Angeles. She alleges she repeatedly told Brand to get off her, and when he eventually relented he "flipped" and was "super angry". She says he threatened to take legal action if she told anyone else about her allegation
    • The third woman has alleged being sexually assaulted by Brand in the UK and him being physically and emotionally abusive towards her

Our full explainer of all the allegations against Brand, which he denies, is available here.

  20. Victim blaming culture deters people from coming forward, MP sayspublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 18 September 2023

Women do not make criminal reports to the police because of a culture of blaming victims and questioning their claims, the chairwoman of Parliament's women and equalities committee has said.

Asked if she was worried that alleged victims were reporting sexual assaults or rapes to the media over the authorities, Caroline Nokes told the BBC this morning that there has been a "loss of confidence" in police forces for many people.

"There is a cultural bias. We've already seen people coming forward questioning the veracity of their claims, challenging them over their own behaviours, questioning why it took so long for them to come forward," she said.

Criticising this "classic culture of victim blaming and shaming", the Tory MP added the environment around these issues "acts as a deterrent" to victims coming forward.

Nokes also said that anyone who says they have been assaulted needs help and "taken through a process that will be sympathetic and supportive to them".
