Here's a look at the key developments:

    • Thousands of people have started marching from Park Lane near Hyde Park, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza
    • The protest coincides with Armistice Day, and a two minutes' silence was held at London's Cenotaph earlier - police said it was observed "respectfully"
    • This was despite officers facing "aggression" from counter-protesters in Whitehall
    • Counter-protesters in Chinatown threw missiles and bottles at officers who tried to engage with them
    • One man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife and another for possession of a baton
    • Officers also detained a "large group" of counter-protesters in Bridge Street, just down from Westminster Bridge
    • Officers say they are tracking "different groups" moving away from Whitehall towards other parts of central London
    • The pro-Palestinian march will head to the US embassy in Vauxhall, south of the Thames - the Met says there have been "no incidents" related to this so far

Things are moving fast here in central London, so stick with us as we bring you the latest on this developing situation.

Pro-Palestinian protestors gather in central London

Underneath the sound of a police helicopter, the echo of chants from megaphones is heard as the protesters continue their march.

I can see many groups who are taking part at the front, including Stop the War Coalition, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Muslim Association of Britain and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Police have closed off one lane of Park Lane allowing protesters to slowly filter down towards Wellington Arch and they are chanting “ceasefire now”.

I’ve noticed several protesters wearing a poppy while also carrying a Palestinian flag.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and current MP John McDonnell are at the front of the march.

  3. Counter protesters threw missiles at officers in Chinatown, say policepublished at 13:17 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

The Metropolitan Police says a group of counter protesters who left Whitehall and moved into Chinatown "confronted and threw missiles at officers who tried to engage with them".

"Additional officers have been deployed to the area to identify, locate and deal with those involved. Our priority is keeping the public safe. We will not tolerate disorder in central London today," the force says on X.

The force says officers arrested one man on suspicion of possession of a knife and a second man who was "found in possession of a baton".

"The majority of the group have dispersed but officers remain in the area," the Met adds.

For now, I’m following the route of the march as it moves south.

Along some of the side streets more and more pockets of people join the large demonstration holding placards and banners.

Everything at the front feels peaceful as members of the public stop to film and take photographs on their phones.

The main protest itself is packed with people of all ages, men, women and children pacing along slowly.

  6. Large group of counter-protestors detained - Met Policepublished at 12:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

An update from the Metropolitan Police now, who say they have detained a "large group" of counter-protesters.

They were stopped in Bridge Street, just down from Westminster Bridge, the force says in a post on X, external, formerly Twitter.

"It is believed they are part of the group involved in the disorder earlier," it adds.

Ahead of the Armistice Day service at the Cenotaph at 11:00 GMT, officers said they faced some "aggression from counter-protesters".

The force added the two minutes' silence there was observed "respectfully".

There's a heavy police presence, with some 2,000 officers deployed across London today.

I’ve spotted officers from Wales, Dorset and Cheshire - who have all been drafted in to help the Met Police.

Protesters are chanting, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as Palestinian flags wave in the air.

Banners are being handed out. Everything so far is peaceful as the crowd slowly walks down towards Hyde Park Corner.

  9. Met says officers face aggression from counter protesterspublished at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

The Metropolitan Police warned earlier of a risk of clashes between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and far-right groups, with an exclusion zone established around the Cenotaph to separate the two events.

In the past hour, the Metropolitan Police reported that officers faced some "aggression from counter-protesters who are in the area in significant numbers".

Groups of men following English Defence League founder Stephen Yaxley Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, were seen making their way from Trafalgar Square down Whitehall, where the Cenotaph is.

Some shouted at police to allow them access to the Cenotaph for the Armistice Day service. Some called the police “mob handed”.

Other reports say chants of "England till I die" and "we want out country back" were heard.

The Met have reported several arrests and reported further clashes in Chinatown.
