  1. No trains from London's Euston stationpublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2023

    Katy Austin
    Transport correspondent

Euston station is currently exit only - meaning it's closed to incoming passengers. And it will be, for at least the next hour.

There are no trains from Euston at the moment because of damaged overhead power cables between Milton Keynes and Watford Junction.

A decision will be taken on what happens next once Network Rail’s engineers have assessed the cables, which they’re currently doing using drones.

    Workers clear debris after tree

A clean-up operation is now underway in the Derbyshire village of Stanley after a 60-tonne tree, measuring around 35m in height, was toppled in the early hours this morning.

Local tree surgeons – clad in bright orange protective clothing - are using chainsaws to remove branches from the tree to make the immediate vicinity safe for residents.

    Lee Mason

I’m told by Lee Mason (above), whose house suffered the brunt of the collapsed tree, that his young son Guy was in bed when it went through his bedroom window.

Lee says he heard what sounded like an earthquake when the tree was brought down during the high winds.

The family safely escaped into the morning darkness, but is now facing an arduous wait to find out the extent of the damage - and just before Christmas.

Now, while waiting outside the house with roof tiles and bricks from the chimney scattered around his feet, Lee says he feels fortunate that everyone got out unscathed.

In light of the Met Office's yellow weather warning, spokeswoman Alice Simpson says drivers "need to be on high alert for fallen branches, and even trees" as well as other debris.

While windy conditions don't tend to cause a spike in breakdown numbers, going over debris can lead to punctures and more serious damage to vehicles, Simpson explains.
