    The idea for the Tour de Yorkshire arose as a legacy event in the wake of the huge success of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart which visited Yorkshire and attracted crowds of more than 2.5m.

    Organiser Gary Verity of Welcome to Yorkshire described last summer's event as "a game-changer for the county".

    The Tour's general director Christian Prudhomme declared the opening to the 2014 race "the grandest Grand Depart ever".

    Good morning and welcome to our live coverage of the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire cycle race.

    Stage One, external of the new three-day event will see the riders set off from Bridlington at 11:45, with riders crossing the North York Moors national park and Dalby Forest before taking a scenic coastal leg from Whitby to Scarborough seafront, where they should cross the finish line between 16:00 and 16:30.

    We'll be bringing you updates from along the route until 17:00.
