    In West Yorkshire, the clear-up is continuing in the Calder Valley, Leeds and Keighley.

    People are trying to pick themselves up and get on with their lives but the message they've got today is that they need help to try to do that.

    The regular police non-emergency number 101 is suffering faults caused by the flooding in Leeds and York.

    In an emergency people should still call 999, but here are new temporary non-emergency numbers for:

    • North Yorkshire Police: 01609 768182

    • Northumbria Police: 01661 872555 or 0191 454 7555  

  3. Respite from rain but forecasters warn more to comepublished at 09:36

    The worst-hit areas will have some respite from rain today but forecasters have warned there may be worse to come as more bad weather is set for the middle of the week.

    Rain will batter the north of England on Wednesday with up to three inches falling on high ground and potentially in excess of 4.7ins in exposed locations.

    The Met Office, external has issued yellow warnings for rain on Wednesday in North West England, North East England, Yorkshire and Humber, Wales and Northern Ireland. 

  4. David Cameron to visit swamped communitiespublished at 09:29

    Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to visit flood-hit areas of northern England later this morning. 

    During his visits, the prime minister is likely to face questions about government funding of flood defences after Environment Secretary Liz Truss said some had been "overwhelmed".

    The River Ouse has stabilised in York with the Environment Agency saying the city is safe from further flooding for the time being.

     City of York Council have said plans for further evacuations would now not happen.  

    Thirty two flood warnings are still in place across North Yorkshire with six severe warnings in York.

  9. North of England flooding: 'Be prepared and follow advice'published at 21:51

    Alison Baptiste, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, has issued this statement, external: "Our thoughts are with all those who have suffered serious flooding to their homes and businesses over Christmas and those who face the risk of further flooding over the coming days.

    "We still have severe flood warnings, meaning a risk to life, in force for parts of Yorkshire and river levels in some areas will continue to rise throughout today and tomorrow.

    "People in these communities should continue to check their flood risk, prepare for flooding, follow the advice from emergency services and never risk driving through flood water."

  10. Electricity safety advice for flood-hit propertiespublished at 21:44

    As flooding continues to affect areas across the north of England, Northern Powergrid has issued this advice for people who's property has been hit and where electricity is still live, external:

    -  Do not enter the flooded area

    -  If you fear water may come into your property, if safe to do so turn off your electricity supply via isolator switch or fusebox

    - If possible, unplug and move any portable electronic appliances to a higher location

  12. York flooding: Six severe flood warnings still in placepublished at 21:32

    A total of six severe flood warnings, external remain in place in York - meaning there's a danger to life. 

    These are:

    - River Foss at Huntington and York

    - Tang Hall Beck at York

    - River Foss at Huntington Road and Foss Island

    - Osbaldwick Beck at York

    - Tang Hall Beck at York - Beckside Properties

    - Osbaldwick Beck at York - Beckside Properties  

    There are 12 less serious flood warnings in place, meaning immediate action is required. For the full list, visit the Environment Agency website, external.

  14. Manchester flooding: Chief Constable praises emergency servicespublished at 21:18

    The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police has thanked the emergency services, local authorities and other organisation for their "excellent work" responding to the "unprecedented" floods which have hit the area.

    Chief Constable Ian Hopkins says, external: "They have been working non-stop as part of the operation to combat the flooding and have done so in very difficult conditions.

    "A lot of people have been safely evacuated from their homes and thankfully we have not had any reports of serious injuries or fatalities."

  15. Archbishop praises 'modern day Good Samaritans'published at 21:11

    The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, says his home at Bishopthorpe Palace is experiencing flooding and has sent a prayer to all those affected in the region., external

    Dr Sentamu says: "Besides the shock and danger of the floods themselves, for those flooded out, the drying time and clean-up period will be long, tedious, costly, and sheer hard work. 

    "It is no surprise, however, to see the people of York responding with tremendous spirit, resolve, and generosity, to the plight of their flooded neighbours at this time.

    "You are our modern day Good Samaritans - I salute your readiness to respond to your neighbour's need."

  16. Leeds flood pub: 'There was nothing we could do about it once it came'published at 21:02

    Kirkstall Bridge Inn in Leeds has been flooded for the second time in a month after the River Aire came over the flood defences yesterday.

    But speaking on BBC Radio Leeds, pub landlord Ian Forster says nothing can keep a Yorkshireman from his pint, and the regulars gathered to watch the water rise.

    "It was kind of funny. We'd all seen it coming so we were all outside waiting with a little cheer, knowing there was nothing we could do about it once it came, this torrent washing over the wall.

    "It's hard work now. It's all about getting it straight to open as soon as we can. With New Year just around the corner it's especially bad timing."

  17. Roads hit by flooding in Bradford districtpublished at 20:52

    Bradford Council has just issued this list of roads affected by flooding in the district:

    - Denton Road and Cowpasture Road in Ilkley are closed

    - Skipton Road in Keighley is closed

    - Mill Hey in Haworth is closed due to a hole appearing in the road

    - Baildon Bridge is open, but Green Lane remains closed

    - The Shipley to Burley-in-Wharfedale road remains open
