    Four men have been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged smuggling of migrants across the English Channel.

    It follows raids in Wiltshire, Birmingham and Blackburn on Tuesday, the National Crime Agency said.

    Two British men, aged 65 and 49, a British citizen of Kuwaiti origin, 42, and an Egyptian, 33, were arrested.

    Victoria Pendleton has confirmed she would ride at the Cheltenham Festival again, if given the chance.

    The double Olympic cycling champion raced at the 2016 Festival in March having first sat on a racehorse just 12 months before.

    She finished fifth on Pacha Du Polder in St James's Place Foxhunter Chase.

    "I don't think I'll ever ride at Aintree but if I get the opportunity to ride at Cheltenham and have a horse good enough, I will definitely take it up," she told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

    A pub in Bristol has had its licence removed by police following a number of serious criminal offences in and around the pub.

    Avon and Somerset Constabulary said it had used emergency powers to strip the Jolly Roger of its licence.

    It comes after a 25-year-old man was taken to hospital having been shot in the stomach outside the pub in the early hours of Sunday morning.

    The order, granted by Bristol City Council, means the pub will not be able to sell alcohol or hold any licensed events for the next three weeks, pending a full licensing hearing on July 14.

  5. Judge allows man to 'die with dignity'published at 20:56 British Summer Time 23 June 2016

    The High Court has allowed a hospital to withhold resuscitation treatment for a dying patient with advanced dementia despite objections from family members.

    The patient's daughter said her father wanted to be treated and the 'do not resuscitate' decision by Great Western Hospital, in Swindon, had caused "immeasurable distress"  

    But the judge said that resuscitation was not in the best interest of the patient because CPR would be "positively harmful", if successful.

    Imagine being 24 years old, a step-parent to one child already and then fostering three children - all at once.

    That's where it started for Sarah Naish, from Dursley in Gloucestershire.

    Ten years later she adopted a further five siblings, including a nine-month-old baby, all in need of a fresh start in life. 

    Sarah has been fostering and adopting children for almost 30 years and has been described as a 'super mum'.

    Glastonbury's main stage opens on Friday but festival goers are all ready to party.

    There may be no music yet, but Glastonbury has already kicked off in Somerset.

    Performances on the main stage do not start until Friday, but nevertheless the camp sites are steadily filling up with festival goers.

    Bristol Rovers chairman Steve Hamer tells BBC Radio Bristol time is "running out" for striker Matty Taylor to sign a new deal at the club.

    Taylor scored 28 goals in all competitions last season making him Rovers' top scorer.

    An investigation has been launched after a man in his 50s died while in police custody in the Forest of Dean.

    The man died last night after officers were called to an incident at the Stowfield Business Park at around 11pm.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission said its investigators had been notified and had spent the day "overseeing post incident procedures". 

    A post mortem is ongoing and formal identification is yet to take place. 

    The man was believed to be driving a black Range Rover Sport prior to the incident. Anyone with information is asked to email witness@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk, external or call 0800 096 9070.

  12. Near-drowning at reservoir sparks fresh safety measurespublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 23 June 2016

    Bristol Water says it will be increasing its presence at Cheddar Reservoir in Somerset after a child almost drowned earlier this month.

    The toddler was riding his bike close to the water edge on Sunday 12 June, but a few minutes later was seen floating face down in the water.

    He was resuscitated by members of the nearby sailing club before being rushed to hospital, the water firm said.

    It has warned people of the dangers of swimming in reservoirs and open water and says it will look at what extra steps can be taken to ensure safety.

  13. Bristol man's award-winning poem in memory of his wifepublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 23 June 2016

    A man from Bristol has won first prize in a national creative competition for sufferers of Parkinson's disease.

    Robin Young wrote his poem, Terminal, following the death of his wife from cancer six years ago. 

    It describes a bunch of flowers he was given by friends when they found out his late wife had cancer.

    A Gloucestershire hair salon says it has been forced to pay a ransom after its computer system was hacked.

    Staff at Stuart Holmes Salon, in Cheltenham, received a message on their screens on Tuesday informing them all their systems had been frozen. 

    They lost access to all their records or appointments and details of their clients and hackers wanted £1,600 in return for giving them back the information.

    Yeovil Town FC player Nathan Smith took himself off to India for a retreat, where he wasn't allowed to talk, read, exercise or write for that time.

    He instead was taught a form of meditation which he practiced for around 10 hours a day.

  16. Glastonbury Festival: Camper van frustration over lack of informationpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 23 June 2016

    People heading for the Glastonbury Festival in camper vans are still parked up in the holding area at the Bath and West Showground.

    Many have taken to Twitter complaining about the lack of information about what's going on.

    Some have been told to stay put for the whole weekend and that buses will be put on to take them to and from Worthy Farm.

    The Court of Appeal has dismissed the applications from Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare to appeal against their convictions and sentences for the murder of 16-year-old Becky Watts, from Bristol.

    Detective Inspector Richard Ocone said: “Our thoughts remain with Becky’s family and friends who have had to endure several court hearings following the trial last year.

    “We hope they will be able to take some closure from this decision which was the last attempt by Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare to challenge their prison sentences.”

    Hundreds of festival-goers are paying tribute to MP Jo Cox at Glastonbury Festival.

    The event, which was postponed from Wednesday, is being held at The Park and will be followed by a march to officially open The Sisterhood - a hidden venue in the Shangri-La area of the festival.
