  1. Watch: Monkeying around with ice lolliespublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 19 July 2016

    John Acres
    BBC Radio Stoke

I've been out to a Staffordshire wildlife centre where animals are being given ice lollies to keep them cool during this week's heatwave.

Monkeys and wolves at Gentleshaw, near Eccleshall, Stafford, have been enjoying frozen grape, apple and pear treats.

Jenny Morgan, managing director at the centre, introduced me to Brian the monkey, who had a novel way of consuming the snacks.

    Pip Watts

Saman Khan and eight-year-old daughter Maliha were hoping to take their visiting relatives to the paddling pool at the Embankment, but it wasn't to be.

"We came to Riverside hoping the pool was open but no, we are disappointed," said Mr Khan. "The kids are playing in the sand and I’m buying them ice creams to keep them happy."

    Saman Khan

The city council said the paddling pool had sprung a leak and needed "major maintenance".

Spokesperson Jane Barton said: "It needs to be safe and to be clean but the water was leaking out badly so what we didn't want was dirty water in there."
