The company confirmed it would suspend its operations from Thursday at its cinemas, including those in Leeds, Bradford, Castleford, Wakefield, Sheffield, Hull and York.

The chain has been affected by delays to the release of big budget films - including the latest Bond movie - because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We did everything in our power to support safe and sustainable reopenings in all of our markets," said chief executive Mooky Greidinger.

The company "cannot underscore enough how difficult this decision was" to close the sites, he added.

The move will affect around 5,500 UK jobs and comes after the release of the latest James Bond film was delayed again.

Mr Hadley, of Third Eye Signs, said his murals could now be seen on walls and shop fronts of several independent businesses around Leeds.

Recounting the number of people who stopped to talk to him while he painted, he said: "An old lady came up to me once and said, 'Are you here to make us happy?' and I thought yes actually, I am."

The project was commissioned by Leeds City Council after it asked people who live and work in the city how they would like it to look and feel.
