    In true northern style, street sweeper Andrew Edwards, 57, was keeping the sun off his head with a flat cap.

    He described working in the city centre during the heatwave as "murder" but plans to keep cool by taking regular breaks in the shade and drinking plenty of water.

    Meanwhile, these glaziers appeared to be making an early start on their window-fitting task, perhaps before the heat reaches its peak this afternoon.

    The Met Office has about 270 weather measuring stations across the UK feeding back hourly updates.

    It is the in the south and east of England where temperatures are expected to be the highest today, peaking at a record 39C.

    Members of the Southern Counties Petanque Association have been enjoying the sunshine and promoting the sport at Southampton's urban beach.

    It's one of the events at the Seaside in the Square attraction which has brought a sandy beach to Guildhall Square in central Southampton.

    Also known as French Boules, the sport has an enthusiastic following in the UK and there was a campaign to have the sport included in the 2024 Olympics.

    If you think it is hot in the UK, spare a thought for our friends on the continent.

    Much of Western Europe is facing record-breaking temperatures again, with the second heatwave in a month set to reach its peak today.

    A red alert has been issued in Northern France - with temperatures of 41C forecast in Paris.

    French officials have warned people to avoid travelling, and to work from home if possible. Children's nurseries have also been closed.

    The chief architect responsible for restoring the Notre-Dame has warned that the extreme heat could lead to the cathedral roof collapsing if the joints and masonry holding up the roof dry up.

    Belgian, German and Dutch temperature records could be broken for the second time in two days.

    By 10:00 the temperature had already climbed above 30C (86F) in some parts of London, the Met Office said.

    Heathrow Airport has recorded a temperature of 31.6C (88.88F) and Kew Gardens, west London, has already seen the mercury hit 31.7C (89.06F).

    On a day that could see record-breaking temperatures in the UK, BBC Weather Watchers in the east of England have already been out and about - presumably before it gets too hot!

    "Ebb&flow" found a dog walker in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, had heeded advice to walk pets early in the morning, posting this image at 06:15.

    A Weather Watcher in Graveley, Hertfordshire, found farm workers were also threshing the fields early doors to make the most of slightly cooler weather.

    Meanwhile, user "Daves Patch" in Holme-next-the-Sea in Norfolk captured horses getting some early exercise.
