Vaccine development is under way but for now they say the best protection is thought to be regular and thorough handwashing.

    You should also:

    • Avoid contact with people who are unwell
    • Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues
    • Throw away any used tissues and wash your hands
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Many places are also recommending and implementing social distancing measures.

After he underwent the operation Ms Davis, 72, returned to Bristol, expecting her husband to follow, but upon arriving in the UK she was told the timing of border closures had meant her husband was left behind.

"It was horrible, and now he is alone. The thought of not knowing when he will be back is even worse," she said.

Police face "one of their biggest challenges" of the lockdown this weekend as sunny weather risks drawing crowds to parks and beauty spots.

Katy Bourne, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, said officers were telling the public to "hang on in there" and avoid unnecessary trips.

Ministers have said "stay at home" is an instruction, not a request.

Ms Bourne told BBC Newsnight: "We've been through a lot, it's very disruptive but let's not give up, let's hang on in there.

"It's a collective endeavour, this is ultimately about saving lives and not putting a strain on the NHS and our other emergency services."
