He said today was very special and added: "Ever since I've been born and lived the Queen's been there and I just don't like to think of a day when she won't be there.

"I often use the bus to travel in West Yorkshire and I hope people who don't normally do this will take a bus journey and be encouraged to use bus travel more often."

The Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Rosanne Kirk, said: "We are extremely disappointed the weather was not on our side today.

"We waited until the last possible moment to make a decision in case the forecast changed.

Councillor Kirk said she hoped to join the Boultham Park community in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee "at a later date".

However, it's not all doom and gloom as a Platinum Jubilee party is due to begin at midday on the Dean's Green at Lincoln Cathedral.

Samantha Mellows from the cathedral said: "It's not every day you get a 70th anniversary and I don't think we'll see another in our lifetime, so it's a chance to really celebrate it

"Your Queen Elizabeth II - my 11th-great-granddaughter - has ruled over this country my son James gifted to her, after the terrible Tudors.

"She has ruled with dignity and compassion, with her wise head staying on her shoulders at all times, through good and bad."

Organiser Roger Hart, from Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club, said he was "gobsmacked" so many people had turned up.

Mr Hart said: "I think it tells us that the Queen is more popular than some people want to know.

"I think the monarchy puts the great in Britain and so I'm a great supporter."
