Students are gathering at the University of Nottingham ahead of a vigil in memory of Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber.

Some have laid flowers. Most are sitting in silence on the grassy banks.

Their grief is still raw - I chatted to some of Barnaby's friends who say they're stunned by what happened.

They have very little else to say. Grief is so very raw here. The shock of what happened has barely sunk in.

We've got a bit more from Ian Coates' sons now, who've been speaking to reporters at Magdala Road, where their father was found stabbed to death yesterday.

They say their father should've died "naturally in 20 to 30 years time, not on a street because some guy decided it's not his day".

One of the sons, Lee, says his father was "due to retire in four months" but "was still grafting" until the end.

    The other, James, adds:

He was everyone's friend, always willing to help.

Speaking at the scene where Ian Coates was found fatally stabbed, his sons Lee and James tell reporters their father would have been on his way to work as a school caretaker at the time of the attack.

They say he was a "die-hard" Nottingham Forest Football Club fan and an "avid fisherman".

"He used to take under-privileged kids fishing just to get away from crime," they say, adding:

  9. Barnaby's cricket club remembers 'quality individual'published at 15:00 British Summer Time 14 June 2023

    Dan Johnson
    Reporting from Taunton

At Bishop’s Hull Cricket Club, three black stumps stand at the wicket, surrounded by a growing collection of flowers and cards placed in tribute to Barnaby Webber.

There’s a photo of their teammate “Webbs” and a red cricket ball with “19 RIP” written on it, marking the sudden, shocking death of a talented young cricketer who continued playing here, even after moving away to university.

He opened the batting ten days ago - scoring 52 not out to give his side victory on this picturesque, well maintained little ground on the edge of Taunton.

Simon Cutler coached Barnaby, who he calls Barney, up to the age of 15. “He was one of the most energetic, dedicated young cricketers," Simon tells me.

“I don’t think it’s landed yet. We all expect to see Barney bouncing out to play cricket next weekend. It’s going to take a long time to appreciate that massive loss.”

The entire cricket community has felt the impact and has paid its respects - with flags at half mast and minute's silences before games across the country.

“People should remember Barney as a really strong personality, a quality individual who had such a bright future in front of him," Simon tells me.

A bit more from the University of Nottingham's vice-chancellor now, who has released a lengthy statement expressing her condolences.

Shearer West says: "It is hard to find the words to express the shock and grief felt across our institution at the senseless loss of two first-year students who have had their bright futures brutally curtailed by a seemingly random act of violence."

"Against this backdrop of deep sadness and loss, I hope we can draw some comfort from the public reaction locally, nationally, and indeed globally to this dreadful crime.

    Quote Message

Nottingham is a wonderful and distinctive city, and our university and civic communities are united both in our grief and in our knowledge that this terrible act is not what our city is about."

Ahead of a vigil here at the University of Nottingham, the mood is quiet and sombre on campus.

Hundreds of students will unite in their grief to remember two of their own who were stabbed to death - Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber.

Both had just started university last year, and were completing their first year and their exams.

The university says Grace studied medicine while Barnaby was a history student.

The vice chancellor, Shearer West, says they're providing support to students as they collectively mourn, and begin the long process of healing.

Almost everyone we've met here says that even with some crime hotspots in the city, they'd never have expected this sort of attack.

"She was resilient and wise beyond her years," they say, adding that the medical student was "so happy in life fulfilling her ambition of studying to become a doctor, whilst playing topflight hockey at university".

    The statement continues:

It shows a man in a black hoodie trying to climb into an open window at a homeless hostel.

An arm from inside pushes him away. Another man outside the hostel remonstrates with him and the suspect then walks off.

We have been told that this happened either just before or during the incident on Tuesday morning.
