    A total of nine roads are shut and flooding is widespread in Shropshire, the council says, external.

    The roads closed are:

    • C2073 (old A442) Hodnet – Marchamley (at Paradise junction)
    • New House Farm, between Hodnet and Marchamley
    • B5476 road at Tilstock
    • Underdale Road, Shrewsbury – under railway bridge
    • B4386 Worthen road
    • B4386 from Lowfield Marton to Red Lion, Westbury
    • A4117 from bottom of Clee Hill to the top
    • Ditton Mill – shut due to land slip and tree in road
    • Astley Abbotts, Bridgnorth

    The Environment Ageny has also confirmed that nine rivers in the county are expected to flood, external, with 17 further alerts where flooding is possible.

    Some schools have closed early and a bus services have been affected.

    A few roads remain shut in Worcestershire as well:

    • New Street in Upton upon Severn
    • A449 at Claines
    • A449 at Ombersley
    • A4023 Coventry Highway, Moons Moat, Redditch

    Worcestershire County Council said there was heavy congestion on the A443 at Holt Heath and advised drivers to avoid the area if possible.

  4. Wharfage closes in Ironbridgepublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

    The Wharfage is closing in Ironbridge as flood waters rise.

    Telford and Wrekin warned people to move parked vehicles to allow its crews to install gully bungs - temporary seals to stop water rising from drains.

    The local authority said part of the Wharfage car park was also closing.

    However, businesses remain open as usual and the council said they could be currently accessed via Buildwas Road for Dale End and Madeley Road for the Wharfage.

    It added that the Environment Agency was monitoring the situation.

    The impact of Storm Babet took people by surprise in Worcestershire, highways bosses say.

    "We were expecting the storm to track a bit further north. So, we've been quite surprised about the amount of rain overnight and into today, that have caused the problems," Jon Fraser, head of highways in the county, told BBC Midlands Today.

    He said there were 20 roads shut across the county, and many others "where there's a lot floodwater and it's slowing traffic down".

    "If you don't have to travel then it's a good day to work from home," Mr Faser continued.

    "But, if you do have to travel then please don't drive through flood water - you don't know what hazards are underneath."

  8. Flood warnings issued for 29 riverspublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

    A total of 29 rivers across the West Midlands are expected to flood, the Environment Agency says, external.

    The warnings mean that nearby properties are also expected to be affected, the agency says.

    There have also been 16 alerts issued for areas where flooding is possible.

    The south of the region has had quite a lot of rainfall, but as we heard through the course of this afternoon, the north of the region is bearing the brunt.

    However, keep an eye out for heavy showers, which are working their way in through the south and could give some heavy downpours through the next few hours.

    In Shawbury in Shropshire, since 15:00 on Thursday, there has been 43mm of rainfall - more than an inch and a half.

    The Met Office still has yellow and amber weather warnings in place for much of the region. There is likely to be more significant rainfall and a chance of flooding.

    There will be some dry spells. Through Saturday there is still more in the way of rainfall to come. It will start to ease as we head through to Sunday.

    Trains running between Birmingham International and Rugeley Trent Valley may be cancelled, delayed or terminated, following flooding of the railway between Walsall and Rugeley Trent Valley.

    Road replacement transport is running between Walsall and Rugeley Trent Valley.

    There are also signalling problems in the Walsall and Tame Bridge Parkway area, causing additional disruption.

    Disruption is expected until 15:30.

    More schools in Worcestershire are closing early due to the weather, particularly in Bewdley:

    • Far Forest Lea Memorial CE Primary Academy & Nursery, in Bewdley
    • Rigby Hall School, in Bromsgrove
    • Matchborough First School Academy, in Redditch
    • St Kenelm's CE Primary School, in Hagley
    • The Forge Secondary PRU, in Redditch
    • Upper Arley CE Primary School, in Bewdley

    Wigmore Primary School in Herefordshire has also closed due to flooding, while the secondary school, which shares the same site, said bus operators were picking up pupils early due to localised flooding.

    Heavy rain has flooded the railway between Worcester Foregate Street and Stratford-upon-Avon.

    Services running to/from Stratford-upon-Avon may terminate/start at Birmingham Snow Hill or divert via Dorridge.

    People may use their ticket on National Express West Midlands via any reasonable route, National Rail said.

    Disruption is expected until 15:30.

    The M54 has reopened in both directions.

    It was closed earlier J6-J7, between Wellington and Telford.

    Earlier, drivers reported being stuck for an hour and a half outside Telford.

    Flooding has blocked roads in Worcestershire, as water flowed off fields and small rivers burst their banks, says Jon Fraser, head of the county's highways department.

    "One of the biggest problems we've got is on the A449 between Ombersley and Claines, that's currently closed," Mr Fraser told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

    Also closed is the A451 between Stourport-on-Severn and Great Witley, he said.

    "Various other roads are closed as well... but it's quite a changing picture," Mr Fraser added.

    Hereford and Worcester Fire Service says it has had more than 100 call-outs to flood related incidents since 07:30.

    Staff at the Warwickshire pub said it was the worst flooding they'd seen in 20 years.

  19. Traffic lights fail on A34published at 13:29 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

    Traffic lights have failed at a junction on the A34 between Birmingham and Walsall.

    They were not working at the Scott Arms junction and there was congestion on the approach, National Express West Midlands has said.

    The 5, 16, 28, 51 and X51 services may be delayed.
