The family now fear they may have lost many belongings.

Katie, from Suffolk, was only allowed to leave with two small bags. Her phone and iPad were left in the chalet.

She told the BBC: "When we were evacuated, we first sought refuge in the pub on site, the Medmerry Arms.

"It was dry when we first entered but soon filled up with water so we had to move upstairs.

"The flood entered the pub downstairs and tables and chairs were swimming around."

Katie said they eventually took boats to waiting ambulances, then went on to a nearby church, before ending up at another site about five miles away, called Seal Bay.

Her parents joined her at about 05:00 BST.

"I’m now standing in a pair of wet socks," she said.

"I tried to get out of the caravan but I couldn’t due to the amount of water. I was sat on the kitchen worktop. The water was three inches beneath it."

He said his van was now completely underwater and he had lost everything.

"My mate’s car is floating. I’ve lost all my tools and my two work laptops. My clothes were in my caravan too."

    Derek and Brenda Owen

"There was just water, water everywhere. It's almost up to the bottom of the caravans and that's the bad time because once they're wet, they're written off really," Mr Owen said.

"Because of the past history a lot of people haven't got any cover for flood damage on their caravans and we are in that category so we just hope it's not going to get any worse."

Flooding in Shoreham-on-seaImage source, Gareth Theobald

A resident of a West Sussex town impacted by flooding said the council response was "appalling and woeful" after he was left to defend his property from floodwater in the early hours.

Shoreham-by-Sea resident Gareth Theobald said he rang Adur and Worthing council and was told the council hasn't "got any provisions to support local residents and businesses in the area" and had "no sandbags".

He said: "Knowing that the council has failed to make provisions or have anything on standby for coastal towns such as Shoreham and all the towns along the coast, for them to not have resources when they're liable to have flooding is farcical. It is appalling and woeful."

An Adur District Council spokesperson said the authority does not have the funding to provide local residents and businesses with sandbags and directed them towards guidance on its website.

The spokesperson said the council was working to build a wall to defend properties from the overflowing River Adur during storms but objections had delayed the scheme.

    Flooding at the caravan park

About 20 caravans have been evacuated at the Bracklesham Caravan and Boat Club in West Sussex.

Site manager Sherrie Streetley said she had been told there was flooding at about 01:00 BST.

“We did have a flood back in 2012, which was quite similar to this," she said.

"The difference with this one is we didn’t have any rain.

"It’s literally all the seawater that’s coming over the stones due to the high tide, and the wind that was behind the tide that’s caused us all the problems.”
